Just saw it on On the Record with Gretta Van Sustern. Glad to see that they found him alive.

They said his boy scout training helped him survive . With proper training he wouldn't have gotten lost in the first place. The whole story has not been told.

yeah, like staying put instead fo wandering around like he did:rolleyes:

still, glad hes ok

Hard to stay put when your goal is to walk to a road and hitchhike home. He got homesick. They're fortunate he got turned around and was only a mile or so away from camp.

So I was right .To just walk away from the camp without a word is dumb. To hitch hike is dangerous.

Great job to the rescue/searchers who found him, my hat's off to them. The boy said he heard the helicopters and people calling his name, but they never heard him yelling back, a Whistle might have helped. I'm very happy and relieved for his parents, my dad would be giving me that "Look" and I'd sure be in trouble if it were me! I'm glad it ended well..

I guess the BSA needs to turn up the teaching a notch on survival techniques,eh? And what to carry?

As a scout I can say that scouting has become quite restrictive in what you can carry. Any blade, folder or fixed, is not "legal" to carry if it is longer than the palm of of your hand. This rules much of my blades. Except for my Moras and my Rd-4.

As for survival skills, you get tought once and expect to remember it all. Plus methods they teach are lacking in many areas. Thats one of the reasons I joined this forum.

Come on now, he is still just a kid, did you ever do anything you regretted when you were young?

I'm not saying that he should have had more survival knowledge or gear, just that he made poor decisions that costed a lot of other people a lot of time, money, and worry. It's also not that I didn't make regrettable decisions when I was young, but that was a lot of consecutive, poor decisions that were costly to more people than just him. Anyway, it has ended well and that's all the difference.

Lil bastard deserved to have been left out there to rot. :grumpy:

;)

Cut the kid some slack. We were all that dumb once. Most of us probably still are, just more experienced, probably were lucky to make it to adulthood.

Glad He was found:thumbup:

Yes he probably did something dumb, But I doubt there is anyone here who hasn't,

We just never got caught ;)

PS: Dantor I couldnt agree more with the steaks, for the dogs, Having worked with rescue dogs a few times, I can say they are truly amazing,

If you think about it, the kid really only made two bad decisions. The first was his original idea about abandoning the camp without telling anyone and trying to hitchhike home. That really was nutty. The second was wandering around once he got lost. Stupid, but perfectly understable - most lost kids (and quite a few adults) do that.

From his father's descriptions in the media, this was a pretty absent minded kid. Hid dad said that they were amazed he still had his fleece and coat on, because on any given schoolday he'd lose items like these.

As I said in another thread, this kid survived on instinct, and its damn lucky they found him when they did. Another couple of days and we would have been discussing a tragedy.

We hardly talk here about the value of "Man's Best Friend" as a survival option. To find us, protect us, track for us, warn us, even keep us company. I have had some great dogs in my life, fun, smart, always there for you, no matter how dumb I was!
