A friend picked up a Plumb Scout hatchet at a estate sale for two bucks. He gave it to me because he knows I love stuff like this. Unfortunately I didn't take any before pics but it had surface rust, the handle was not real bad but there was a giant steel wedge in they eye, and the wood was splintered and the head was loose.

I really wanted to save the handle so I worked on it some and made a wedge out of a piece of Poplar i got from the hardware store.

It turned out okay, i'm pretty new to this and I didn't have a lot to work with.

The head spent a day in a vinegar bath, then got the wire wheel treatment.

I realy like the shape of the handle, it appears to be designed for someone right handed. Is this normal for these old scout hatchets? Guess it sucked being the left handed kid back then.

If I had to guess, part of the palm swell chipped and someone sanded it smooth giving it and odd shape. Nice looking hatchet, and a good job fixing it up.

You did a really nice job of cleaning that up! Gear such as this often spends years languishing on a shelf in a garage or basement for wont of someone to take a shine to re-doing (or re-newing) a handle. Chances are your buddy is going to become jealous. Factory handles are generally symmetrical: a 'righty' with a file or sandpaper might have doctored that one during a rainy day when not much else was going on. Or as the previous poster suggested, it chipped (axe throwing with the butt striking a hard target?) and was cleaned up and smoothed out.

yeah, i have a bingmaster and an old hand-made handle that are "right handed", and i found a chopped up craftsman handle that was the same way, handles like this are why i practice ambi swinging, because im left handed. that is a nice BSA though, i'd love to find one for cheap

I decided to try my hand at leather work again and I made this little sheath. I'm getting better but I don't think I'll be making a saddle any time soon.
