"Scout" Knives

I moved this over from another thread to make sure it didn't go away too soon.

The ‘scout’ knives are knives that were made specifically to be a little lighter in weight.
Another good example would be the MSC 6.5 and 7.5 knives. (These knives by the way are now called the Mk1 6.5, and Mk1A 7.5). We changed the name when they became company items. It keeps us from getting too confused.

In the world of today, fighting men carry a LOT of gear. A LOT!!!
It is often very hard to find a place to put everything.
Weight becomes a HUGE issue.
The last thing you want is to have an added weight pulling you down.

We began making large frame knives that were significantly lighter in weight than their predecessors.

The project really began with the MSC 6.5 and 7.5 inch knives. (Now the Mk1 and Mk1A).
Faced with huge demand for lighter weight, large frame knives, I designed and built the MSC’s.
We were VERY happy with the outcome. The problem was that the knives were prohibitively expensive due to the way they were ground. In order to relieve weight but not strength, we use a full bevel grind.
Now we have the technology to grind them a lot more efficiently.
Therefore the move to having them in our ‘line’.

With the popularity of the Mk1 program, we began making several models in ‘scout’ configuration.
To date we have made the following models in ‘scout’.
1. Mk1, Mk1A
2. MT, MT.SS
3. HT
4. WB
5. BT, BT.SS

I guess you could include the EB’s since they are Full bevel ground. But that is the way they will always be. Same with the MFS and the folders.

In the beginning we only make the knives for Military sales.
Then, in our usual fashion, we began making overruns.
Overruns are great for us; we make sure we have enough to folfil our contract, then sell the rest to collectors.
Lately, go figure, we are doing a lot of scout knife projects. We are currently making MT.SS’s, HT’s , WB’s and Mk1’s.

If anyone is interested, give us a call. Im sure we are making more than we have on order.

Excuse me if this is a dumb question. Whats the difference between flat ground and full bevel ground. I have newer model HT flat ground stamped ATS-34. It looks ground simliar to the MT in the upper part of your picture. Do I have the HT scout? It really does'nt matter. I just like to know as much as possable about the knives I own.

Thanks, Reagan

Hey Mick, thanks for the update, but I'm still a little confused as well.

I recently aquired one of your Custom MSC6.5 from another forum member and I hope it will be here on Monday (WooHoo!). I was lucky to find this one because it is the older hollow grind that I prefer. Now, I've seen pictures of the later MSC 6.5 models that you've produced. Is this the full bevel grind that you are talking about? I think this is what most of us have been calling "flat" ground.

Basically, what I think I'm asking is,

1) Were there only two grinds available for most of these knives (i.e. hollow and full bevel (a.k.a. flat))?
2) If so, then are most of your current production knives comming out full bevel only, and are these what you call your scout models?
3) Finally, what are the chances that you will ever bring back the hollow grinds?

Sorry for the convoluted questions, but it's late and there are far too many empty Guinness bottles around.;)

Thanks!

Okay…
A full bevel grind is one that is a “flat” grind, but goes almost all the way to the spine.

A flat grind is one that is flat, but does not go all the way to the spine. Our flat ground knives usually have about a .75inch grind.

Our hollow grind is done on an eight inch contact wheel.

I made several hollow ground MSC’s. Now that the model has moved into the Strider lineup, I don’t think Ill be making any more.

Most of our product these days is not full bevel ground. Mostly we use a flat grind. Some models are always full bevel ground. Folders and EB’s for example.

Sorry my answers are short.
I feel like a dogs ass.

Hope all is well

Mick

Sorry, I missed a few questions…

The thickness and over all dimensions are the same.
We simply remove more metal in the grind.

Thanks Mick, Great information! Sounds like my HT is a scout model.

Thanks Mick,

I got that hollow ground MSC 6.5 in today and I must say that you do some fine work. It is an awesome piece.

As for the grinds, I think I understand the difference. My only other Strider right now is a BN/SS and if I'm not mistaken, it is flat ground. Correct?

I hope you're feeling better:(
