I took my Cub Scout Pack hiking today. My Asst. Cubmaster, "Mountain man" Matt has spotted a couple of eagles nesting down by the Hudson river and led to look for them and hold a contest to see who brought the best GORP (good old-fashioned raisins and peanuts). We pause our hikes for wilderness instruction trees, scat, fire, gear etc.... No eagles today, too windy, but a great time none-the-less:

Each den brought gorp, an amazing variety of tastes (probably about 15 different types). We are considering publishing a recipe guide. Some excellent venison jerky was available too.

And yep, I brought a blade.. I took my Gossman golok which has been on my belt a lot recently (GREAT blade..):

It's never too windy for eagles ! I once watched an eagle hover ! He would hover and this was easy in a 30-40 mph wind .He would look for fish then procede up the river about 200 yds hover again and repeat ! A friend was out recently in another windy day and there was lots of activity with eagles.
We had a good Cub Scout group in Brooklyn and I still have memories after many years !

Mete - Scouting is awesome isn't it? I'm not very knowledgeable about eagles, I'm not sure I've ever seen one in the wild. A couple of folks who seem to know what they were talking about seemed to think that the heavy wind on the river impacted them, but I'll take your word. We have a lot of red-tailed hawks around my property and they will ride the wind, circling, and then swoop down. I'll sometimes lay in one of our fields and watch them, very cool....

I wish my sons pack was that active!
Our pack sucks!

We happen to have a great mix of adults, a bunch of outdoorsmen, arborists, engineers, etc... Everybody seems to have something to offer. We are right between the Catskills, Adirondacks, and the Berkshires. So our motto is "Leave no child inside!". Our pack used to do less outdoors, but a bunch of us got involved and changed that...

Looks like a good old time with the scouts

I really like the idea of a gorp recipe guide.

I was amazed by the variety of GORPs, It's probably worthy of a thread.

Hmmm, why muzzle the mascot? I'm surprised they let you bring such a big blade. Pretty slick though!

I don't why Nana is muzzled, she's the friendliest dog you'd ever meet, but there a lot of young kids around, I think the lady who owns her is just taking precaution. I'll tell you what, the pictures don't do that big girl justice, she's a good-looking animal.

I'm not really sure what you mean about packing the blade being a problem, there isn't really a "they", and I'm not aware of any crazy knife laws in the upstate woods of NY yet... The golok is awesome blade.. I've been using it over the last couple days, made my wife a walking stick and did chopping with it yesterday. Takes a wicked edge.

Nana isn't muzzled, that is called a Gentle Leader. The leash is hooked up under the dogs nose. They are much less likely to pull on their leash than with the leash hooked to their collar. Great product if your dog pulls.

Interesting. I spend a fair amount of time walking around Nana, and I always assumed it was muzzle too... Here's to life-long learning:thumbup: You are worthy of your moniker bro...

Great looking dog. Mine's a puller, I'd like to try one of those collars.

If you know your raptors you might see interesting things ! My friend saw a golden eagle amongst the bald that's a very rare sighting. I've also seen rough legged hawks and snowy owls here also very rare as they are Canadian birds who move south when their staple food, lemming , are down in numbers. If you want to be awed go to Hawk Mountain in PA during fall migration.Would you believe 1200 of one type of hawk in one day ??
Gorp with M&Ms ? that looks interesting .

Great outing Mneedham
I have taken my den out by the Delaware river a few years ago and we had a great time and were able to see 3 or 4 different eagles. The kids loved it. It might be a drive for you but another good place to see eagles is near the Ashokan reservoir.
The gorp recipe contest sounds great, I am going to have to try that with the boy scouts. I hope you post some of the recipes here.
Thanks for the pics, looks like a great time.

Great pictures, mn and a great turn out.

Doc

Doc - We usually get 45-50 folks. The boys and and parents seem to be really into it:thumbup:

No, I just have a dog that used to pull.:D That is Buddy in my avatar.

Mine are out of shape right now (they laid around by the woodstove all winter..) so they are not pulling much:D

the dog I live with goes uncollared. I swear she's the most perfect dog on earth

Dogs are good:thumbup:

Mete - I'm not very knowledgeable at all.... The only raptor I see regularly are red-tailed hawks, we often see 3-4 cruising above our property... nothing like 1200 though:eek: I was really hoping to see the eagles and I hope to get back down there soon....

BTW - I'm going to do a GORP thread after my next Pack meeting, I asked everyone to bring their recipes, there was cinnamon Gorp, chocolate, sweet and sour, etc. etc....
