Last weekend was spent outdoors teaching our Scouts their tool permits. (Fire, Axe & Saw, Knife, Lantern & Stove) Most permits were achieved. The kids had a few surprises. They all seem to think that a couple of sparks will light the whole forest on fire, let alone a big log. Even once they got the fire going, lunch took forever, until it was suggested that the fire ring should be jacked up on one side. (Remember the fire triangle) The other thing they cam away with is they all want a good bow saw over an axe. The saw is so much easier to use than swinging and axe for a 12 year old. Had lots of fun, only one small knife cut to a finger. Kids love to do for themselves...at least until they become teenagers.
