Does anyone have a scout scope set up? It would seem that if you were going to scope a lever action that would be the way to go. It would give you some magnification good for the ranges levers usuallly are used for. It would also let you carry the rifle like it was meant to be carrierd.

If you do use them, what kind of mounting system do you use and what scope?

I've tried Burris & Leupold.
Leupold is fractionally brighter & more expensive, Burris is smaller & lighter. I have two of the Burris Scouts at the moment, one mounted.
Can't recall what the rings are on the Savage, it's been a while. Used the rail already on the Savage Scout.

Putting a scope on a levergun is, however, immoral, sick, twisted, against the laws of nature, a total perversion of the way God intended the universe to run, and the very obvious sign of a seriously deranged & deviant mind. :)

I have to agree with DPis assessment of mounting a scope on a lever action. Receiver sights are both proper and useful but a scope? No. However if you are going to do it go with the Leupold FX-II 2.5x28mm IER. I have used scout mounts on rifles other than levers and I think spending a couple hundred for a scope is not unreasonable at all.

Yeah, yeah, scopes on lever guns are terrible. So is having terrible vision only partially corrected by thick glasses.

Shann,
I never said not to do it, I was merely pointing out that John Wayne will not greet you with open arms when you reach Heaven & every horse within a 200-mile radius will view you with secret (among the polite ones, not so secret among the less polite ones) contempt.

If you're prepared to deal with that, gopher it! :)

I've tried a Wild West Guns .457 Mag in a Marlin platform with a Scout scope. It was much easier to hit with, I'll grant you that. I did it in a remote abandoned gravel pit where nobody but my shooting buddy could see & he promised not to tell.
I just can't personally bring myself to do it on my own leverguns, even if it means restricting targets to 10 or 12 feet.
Some things a man's just gotta not do.....;)

Your choice.
Did I mention I prefer the Burris?

While John Wayne's disfavor hurts a bit, I don't like horses so I won't mind if the feeling is mutual. The question is more theoretical anyways.

I've heard great things about the Wild West guns. Why do you prefer the Burris?

Lighter weight, as noted above, and slightly less bulk.
The older (OLDER, not ODDER!) I get, the more I appreciate lightweight guns.

as far as scopes on levers imho it depends on the rifle, while i personally wouldnt put optics on a winchester '94 but optics on a browning BLR or a savage '99, or the winchester 88 are a long way from a bad idea,

and while i wouldnt do it a lotta folks do scope '94s, with scout mounts and others, and seem to like the idea, i suppose the scout mount set up doesnt look too bad on the '94, to me,

Sif,
I understand it's a personal preference.
I've heard of people doing it, I've also heard there are people who put scopes on HANDGUNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My own personal preference is to live in peace & harmony with every horse in the neighborhood (they know better & they DO talk amongst themselves), and to be able to look Big John right straight in the eye if I ever do make it to heaven. :D

I'd worry more about what shooting experts would say not what an actor would think. Since it is in the interest of hitting the target, I'd imagine it would be fully endorsed.

(I realize the actor reference is a bit tongue in cheek. :))

But what about the horses man?:p

So are there open sights that someone with poor vision can use? I imagine they aren't as good as a scope but there must be something better than that tiny black front sight.

Look at Jim Brockman's site for Marlin sights, Wild West Guns typically sells their own Marlin sights but the website currently doesn't seem to show any in stock.
Winchesters can be fitted with Williams peeps.

XS front sights can be fitted to either brand. Much more visible.

(Horses find the above alternatives to be much more acceptable than glass & you'd have at least a fair chance of explaining yourself to Big John.)

Scopes and lever guns... I actually plan on getting a Marlin in .30-.30, in SS, with a factory mounted scope... Hey, if I can't see what I'm aiming at, how am I gonna hit it? Sorry, but my old eyes are getting on to be 20-600... I'll scope it if it helps to hit it...
I've an ACOG on my AR-57, a EOTech on my SIG-556 and a Firefly on my AK... If it helps, I'll use it.. :D

Besides, if you go to the thread on Leverguns from a few weeks ago, there's a nice pic of levergun w/a scope propped up against a tree that apparently gets used frequently and successfully... And as John Wayne got older, he couldn't see so well, either - it's amazing what cinematic magic could do to make him look like he was hitting what he was aiming at! :D

Saying John Wayne used movie trickery to make it look like he was hitting what he was aiming at is...is...the equivalent of saying the Statue Of Liberty wears a thong under that gown.:eek::eek:

How durst you attack the character of a national icon? :p

So he really killed all those guys he was shooting at? WOW, the Stuntman's Union is a lot stronger now; they don't even let Chuck Norris do that! :)
