Schrade USA of course. Which would you say is the stronger of the two. The Schrade since it is full tang? Which is the best all round for hunting or camp. I know different steels.

Aw man....that's a tough choice. I have both and love both. If you are looking just at strength, I'd go with the deerslayer since it is full tang. Both are great for general camping and for dressing out game. I probably wouldn't use the Buck for batonning (at least not thick wood). Go with the Schrade...but check around on the evil auction sites and see if you can get an old one for a good price.

I dunno. I've never used one of the Schrades.
I have a Buck Special and have used it, but I prefer the design of the Buck Pathfinder, which I've used a lot more. Both my Bucks are of 440C vintage.

Bark River makes a vesion of that design called the "Fingerling" that could could be an interesting alternative also.

Both great knives, but id choose the Buck for strength and edge holding ability over the Schrade for ease of sharpening in carbon steel.Although the Buck is not exposed tang,I consider it a full tang as it does go all the length of the handle and is pinned through the pommel.Ive never seen or heard of one with a busted tang or handle. The phenolic handle material is nearly indestructable in itself. It will break, but it takes a large hammer on a solid steel surface.(How i remove them):;)Also, the Buck is readily available for very reasonable prices and the Schrade has collector value upcost.

I'd go with the Buck special.

I had a Buck 102 woodsman from 1969 to 1999, and used the hell out of it for everything outdoors. It got pushed a bit, because it was a full length tang. It never failed and in 2000, Karen bought me a new one because she said my sharpened toothpick needed to be retired.

When I was in the army, the PX sold Buck's for a deep discount off the civilian retail price. Many troops carried the Buck Special and the Buck General, the little longer of the two. I saw them beat to hell, pushed and pryed, and used with the gusto only a non knife person can punish a knife with. They took it.

I go with Buck over the Schrade anyday.

Carl.
