Since this H.I scram was a kinda blem that I snatched up I thought I would do a quick etch on it the other day to see what I would find before I bring out the temperline on my other scam that Keith a great job on...looks much better then on this crappy scan...method I use is my lazy way of just slappin on the PCB with a rag on both sides, let it sit for a few seconds, wash blade with dish soap water and green pad, spray with window cleaner...thats it...

This is my scram that is pictured here that I bought as a blem so you can see the before look of the blade

Wow, I gotta do that to mine. What a perfect hamon, hardened all the way to the tip! I could ask for no better. God job!

Keith

p.s. "slappin on the PCB with a rag "--what is PCB?

PCB Etchant Solution bought from Radio Shack ( cat no. 276-1535A) I use full strength as it says on the clear bottle with white lable black letters...for those now going to look for it:D

Interesting that you do it full strength. any problems with pitting?

If I remember correctly, general sugegstions over in shop forum is like a 4:1 water to Ferric Chloride(PCB etchant, in layman's terms) mix, or even more dilute, depending on who you talk to.

Also distilled water is supposed to give a better etch than tap water.

everyone has their own way of doing an etch on a blade to bring out the temper line...this is just one way I do it just as I wrote above..takes about 10min. Some cut the PCB some dont...direction says "use full strength" so I use full strength...the water and dish soap is just used to stop the PCB and to clean the dark gunk off the blade while scrubbing the blade down with a green pad under running water

Correction to my earlier post, blieve directiosn I gave were more for bringing out distinctions in damascus than for just bringing out a temperline.

So feel free to ignore. :)

Have a bottle of PCB etchant in cabinet with rest of my knife stuff, just haven't used it yet.

Ferric Chloride...right, thasswhat I use.

I do 1:1 mix w/distilled, for a fast-eatin etchant. Use warm.
Ferric Chloride is neutralized with baking soda, which makes some orange foam in a rather vigorous reaction.
This is handy to know, if you use a metal lined sink or plumbing pipes.
