scrap G-10 or Micarta from where?

Does anyone know where I can get some scrap pieces of G-10 or Micarta (preferably G-10)? I'm looking for small (but not smaller than about 2" x 4") and thin pieces (1/16" - 1/4"). I want 5 or 10 pieces to do some "experimenting" with, and don't want to pay alot for it. Thanks in advance.

Getting any for free will probably be pretty tough. I got some great samples of handle materials from Kit Carson, including several types of G-10, two types of rosewood, some ivory Micarta, some camo G-10, some black paper Micarta in 3x thickness, some black linen Micarta, black canvas Micarta, rag Micarta, and a few other things, including some carbon fiber! Now, not all of it was usable for a complete knife, although about 80% would've sufficed for a regular sized blade, and probably the rest could've been used on a small folder. In any case, Kit was very generous, but the point is that I traded some stuff to him, and we both probably made out pretty well. You may want to contact some plastics distributors or something in your area and see if you can get samples that way, although i suspect you'll have to find someone to trade with, or more likely, you may have to simply buy it.

Oh, and one other thing...for the money, I think Micarta makes MUCh nicer handles than G-10. Micarta is easie to work, has a nicer layer structure, and is overall a better material, in my opinion. Plus it is less toxic than G-10, although both require pretty stringent respiratory protection. If you get a hold of some Micarta, preferably linen Micarta in butterscotch, or some Canvas Micartas in different colors, I would be willing to trade the G-10 I have. I currently have four sizable pieces of black (I don't have them in fornt of me, but I would estimate them to be of the "redular" folder thickness of about 1/8" or so, and probably 2"x5 or 5.5" LxW). Pretty good sizes that would suffice for the smallest folder or largest fixed blade (not a double-handed sword, though!). I also have some of Kit's own Camoflage G-10, which is really cool. I think he gave me 4 pieces, which are pretty small. WOuld suffice for experimenting and probably a small or medium folder with bolsters, but not enough for a handle
of substantial size by themselves. I would throw these in for a couple scales of Micarta. Anyway, let me know. I may even throw them in for a trade on a knife if you have something you are looking to get rid of. Let me know!

Chiro75:While agree with you that micarta makes a better looking handle, G10 is resistant to petroleum products, now this isn't important to some users it may be a factor to others.

I don't mind paying for it and, I was actually expecting to pay for it. But, I just don't want to have to buy huge amounts of the stuff. Does anyone know where or from whom I could buy some? Maybe Kit Carson?

Well, if you are looking to buy, then any of the mailorder places will have Micarta, and most have G-10 as well. Texas Knifemakers Supply has a great selection of Micarta, and I believe they have stocked G-10 since my last catalog. What type of experimenting on these materials were you looking to do, anyway? Micarta scales go for around $10 a pair, give or take a bit, and G-10 is about the same if not more. Varied by size, thickness, and often color.
