I recently recieved a SYKC Regulator (about 1-2 weeks ago). First the specs:
Blade Style: Bowie Clip Point
Steel: SR-101 (52100 w/ Busse Combat Heat Treat)
Blade Length: 7 1/2"
Blade Thickness: .333"
Tang: Full, Hidden
Grind: High Hight Saber
Edge: V
Handle Material: Resiprene-C
Lanyard Hole: Yes
Coating: Black Crinkle-Coat we all know and love
Ok, let me go over the knife in detail, both good and bad. I recieved the knife wrapped up in plastic in the cardboard sheath. I noticed it didnt feel quite as heavy as I thought it would, but a little heavy anyway. The handles of the knife always look wierd in all the pictures I have seen online, but in reality they are just great! The flare out in the front and the back, on the x and y axis. The pommel is wide and it flares out and you can use your palm to smash down into it to drive the point into wood. Overall, the handle performs very well. The material was very hard, I was expecting reall soft rubber but no its pretty hard, tackyish even, and dirt doesnt stick to it!!! I was impressed when I took the knife out and dug a very small hole, and the blade was covered in dirt but the handle wasnt. Too cool. (Also, forgot to add, the choil is highly usable without the top guard).
I have an issue with the guard, though. The top guard prevents choking up on the blade, and because of the choil it positions the hand far away from the power area of the blade. I cut off the top guard with a box cutter (and yes, I did buy 2 de-regulators as well). I like it much more now. Overall the handle is very cool and I give it an 8/10.
The blade, the blade. 52100 is an extremely clean steel, with very high wear resistance and high toughness, just an excellent steel all around. But when it gets the BCK heat treat it REALLY shines. I was very impressed with the edge holding capabilities of SR-101. However, it rusts very aggressively, especially if finished with a coarse grit stone. This is because the steel does not have enough free cromium to aid in stain resistance (most of the cromium is tied up with other things, mostly to make carbides, which is why SR-101 has such high wear resistance!) Overall, I give the steel a 10/10, I wont even deduct a point for stain resistance just becuase it is so great all-around.
Blade design was WAY too thick for detail work (for myself, anyway). .333" saber grind!? It makes for a formidable battoning tool, the thickness acts like a wedge and just blasts the wood thats getting battoned in either direction away from the blade. The tip is absolutely strong, I dont know where people have been getting their info, it is most definitely NOT delicate- it is extremely robust, I have been using it to open cans and it hasnt even dulled. It makes for a great "exploring" probe when I'm out walking in the woods, I use it to pry in crevasses and lift rocks etc., also to drill holes. One thing I noticed about the knife that I didnt expect was that it has something of a rounded spine- I thought only my Busse had that. I dont mean Nuclear Melt Down, I mean the corners are rounded. I think this is a very nice touch on an otherwise ugly knife (but I love it, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and to me functionality=beauty), this is something that is usually not seen in knives costing ~$100, and even then in higher end knives it is still somewhat uncommon. It is in the details where Busse-kin REALLY shine! HOWEVER:
I did have 1 issue with the knife. The edge. WTF is going on here? The last 2-3 inches near the tip are so OBTUSE >..... I cant cut anything well with that edge! I dont know if that is covered under warranty but I sure hope it is, because that edge is beyond horrible.
Overall rating: 9/10
The knife is my second favorite (right after my EDC Busse), and were it not for the edge I would have ZERO complaints. Oh, and one more thing. SR-101 RULES! HERE IS PICS:
Thanks for reading guys comments are always appreciated. Also, I have more pics of it in use, but I lost my camera cable. If I can find it then
