Scraped the bejeezus out of my neck on Valentine's day

I had a styptic pencil so I got the cuts patched up before it was time to slip on a white Tshirt. Still, this is the first time this has happened. Merkur razor and Derby blades, I loaded a fresh blade for the shave, didn't dig into my neck or anything, it just gouged gibbets of meat out of my neck for whatever reason.

The styptic pencil left white residue on the collar of my red button down shirt for the evening.

Do you guys generally shave in the morning before an event, giving enough time to heal up?

Normally I get a nick or two but nothing like this. I felt like I had ribbons of meat hanging off my neck that I could have dried into jerky after this one.

It could have just been a bad blade that made it through QC. Take out that blade, inspect the razor and the edge of the blade like you were looking for flat spots on the edge of your knife. If everything looks good clean the razor and drop in a new blade and you should be good to go once you heal up. At the cheap price of blades its not worth trying the same blade again, the inspection is just to see if you can see what the problem was.

I haven't used Derby blades in some time now, because when I first started they irritated the crap out of my face. In a recent group of razors I bought there were some derby blades thrown in so I might give them a go again. If they don't work this time, thats the last I will try them.

As for when I shave? Well I shave when I want to. Bad answer I know, but its the truth. I find that I get a close enough shave each time that I am good for 16+ hours with little or no stubble. I have also been lucky enough not to have what happened to you happen to me.

Sounds horrific, must be something wrong with that particular blade. It has happened to me that I've begun a shave and encountered burn or a painful shave.I immediately change the blade and that's always done the trick.

When you get a good shave, both with and against the grain, it's so close and smooth that if you shave the night before and have a morning appt. it will be impeccable .Likewise morning for early evening fixture. DE shaving is so close-and I have a coarse mixed beard-that you can expect long lasting results. sitting in some meeting today, studying other colleague's shaves, very poor I thought. Most of em are electric shavers or cartridge, and it all looks shoddy. This is what DE shaving does for you, raises expectations and standards of shaves.

 +1:D I to have found that my standards for shaving have gotten much higher since I switched

Sorry to hear of your troubles. What was your pre-shave prep?

I shave after a hot shower. My wife sets the hot water heater at 160 so it's HOT. Once I get out, I generally get my lather on and my razor running within five minutes, so I don't think it's prep.

My beard pattern has a swirl in it, so that's probably part of it.

I have some pre shave oil that I can use, so maybe there's a tweak or two I can use before I change anything big.

This was also the first time I used the Art of Shaving soap, maybe that had something to do with it.

Never had trouble like this before.

I'm sure glad I had a styptic pencil available to save my white tshirt from getting all bloody.

I will say that after an hour or two of dancing with my old lady that I didn't start to bleed again and had a great time. If any of you guys don't swing dance you're missing out.
