today i got my scrapyard bird dog i opened the box an loved it the handle the shape, the steel at 154 cm then i got to the blade an the edge looked like it had mini serrations,it looked bad tried to sharpen but after almost 2 hrs. i gave up,you can still see the jagged edge got most of it out, looks like they ground the edge with 80 grit, should i send it back to scrapyard an ask them to fix it.my camera is down so no picks tried to use the cellphone but pics suck

well treg i started with my coarse dia.then worked my way down to my fine dia the my japanese water stones then stropped it,at the very edge youcan still see a fine jagged edge,i think it has to be regrind a little more..

my swamp rat hairy carry was the same.. totally unacceptable IMO. i've heard the same about some Busses... it's like they're forcing us to support RAT. I will say that my Swamp Warden's edge was perfect and the SR101 is the best steel I've ever come across. I'm itchin to try RAT's 1095 though.

One of My SRKWs was like that too, BUT Is was profiled really nicely, So it was an extremely WICKED cutting edege, Poor QC or not, I liked it that way. It could zip through anything in a second. It's not supposed to be like that, I know, but it the poor QC in this instance I liked. It's a good edge profile with millions of mini serrations. It shaves with effort, but it cuts material like nothing else I have used. It's like haveing, say a Bob Dozier in D2, Cutting machine with a polished edge and great profile and taking it to a coarse stone. I like it. But since it's not supposed to be like that(and yours might not be like mine) I wouldn't even bother trying to fix it. You paid for a Blade with a Finished edge and thats what you SHOULD get. So Send it back and make them do it, or send it back for a refund and go somewhere else. 2/4 of SRKWs I got where like that. Maybe they have a New guy grinding, or forgot to finish a batch on the finishing wheel?

Ive heard alot of complaints about Busse factory grinds recently, which really surprises me. The ones Ive had in the past were awesome, and they aren't getting any cheaper...

I love my Busses...Im new to them. It seems though that most of us that use them have them sharpened before using them too much. They beg to have your favorite grind done to them. That said, my NMSFNO came very sharp and well ground from Busse recently.

i had 2 busses their edges was perfs never had a swamp rat an its my first scrapyard must had slipped past the QC,i think i will look for a maker here in hawaii to fix the edge if cant then back it goooooos.....i think there warranty will take care of this??????will it

well it does say on the scrapyard web site that they are concerned with performance and no so much cosmetics.

I would be shocked if it didn't! I'm sorry you've had this bad experience and I'd like to see this fixed.

FWIW, my last few Busses came with high quality edges. Yes, I did mess with them a bit, but that's just my OCD kicking in. They didn't need it.

i almost got it took me another hour but it can shave alittle hair now.to OldPhysics thanx for the concern dont worry a deals a deal an i love the feel of that muddy grip, the blade shape an size is perfect ,its like an old custom hunting blade i had way back but with a better handle thats why i wont give up on this blade i love it.an your a good guy i buy a blade from you any time bro.,cant wait to skin me a boar, aloha

I have a great local shop that does slack belt and other sharpening. They do a great job. Im betting you have someon local there as well.

I think I heard the most complains about 6 months to 18 months ago. During the recent months, I haven't heard any about Busse (haven't paid attention to Swamp Rat and Scrapyard), and the Busses that I've gotten from the factory (3) have all had very good grinds and nice edges.

If I was Kalama, I would contact Scrapyard customer service asap. They will make it right. I do understand that it's annoying to have to ship stuff back for quality issues, but them's the breaks... Sometimes it happens.

the edge is the very soul of performance,,,,man i like that one,,how true it is

I'm very relieved. Thank you for the post.

I'll be looking forward to pictures of that skinned boar, since I live so far away from you that I won't be able to savor the scent when it's cooked. :)

And like Elen said, don't be afraid to ship it back to Dan Busse. He'll stand by his product.

I have eventually re-profiled every Busse/Scrapyard/SRKW blade I've put into regular use. The edge from the shop seems to be made to chop through a Chevy Nova but I don't anticipate that need. Once I get them laid back a bit, 20°-25°, they are flawless choppers and slicers. They hold the edge and are easy to resharpen. I mix it up with the stones and the sandpaper and never have a problem.

How do you use the sandpaper? On a block? Im new to the sandpaper usage.

Glued to an old mousepad cut into strips as wide as those free wooden paint stirrers you get at the hardware store then I glue the other side to the squared end of the paint stirrer. I used contact glue. Strop it like a razor at whatever angle you would like your edge to be. There are different and more detailed instructions on this forum and on Bladeforums in general.
