I'm looking into getting a big knife and I'm seriously considering knives from these two companies.

I want a knife with blade length between 6-10" and it has to be thick enough to pry with at least a quarter inch.

I need one that can chop wood or take down a door easily.

How does sr77 steel compare against 5160?

Does anyone have experience with these 2 companies?

Thanks.

5160 is tough carbon steel, but SR-77 is among the toughest steel. S-7 steel is used in industry for impact tools such as shearing blades and jackhammer bits. If toughness is your main criterium, there is no contest. If you're concerned about edge holding, sharpenability, etc. that's another matter. For toughness, you can't do any better than SR-77.

My humble opinion.

The most important difference between these two companies is that its much easier ot get a Ranger than a Scrapyard. If you don't abuse your knives, e.g. chopping concrete, both steels won't let you down. SR-77 is an incredible tough steel and the 5160 is also a pretty shock-resistant steel, though Noss did a Ranger. To sum it up: Scrapyards are hard to get, so if you're not willing to search for one, just get a Ranger.

Just my 0.02 €

Both make nice knives, I would go with the Busse. If you do get a Ranger get the stuff before Ontario get's ahold of them.

If you want to take down a door, get an axe, a REALLY big axe, or, even better, a really heavy hammer. I think you'll find a knife a bit... impotent... when it comes to this task.:D

Firemen have used axes for a long time breaking down doors, knocking holes in walls, etc. Even then, they usually use the spike or the top of the axe-head, not the edge, because it tends to get wedged in the cut.

that depends are we talking about the front door of the trailer lol or the oak front door at my house?

Also a factor to keep in mind. Even an axe won't stand up to a heavy steel door like I have at my house (although you could just break the glass window that's set in the door:D). For something like that, you're better off going with a battering ram like the SWAT teams use. THEN you're stuck with the problem of carrying the sucker around...

Look for a Combat Grade Dogfather. Short of a Busse Fusion Battle Mistress, you won't find anything tougher within your specified size range. And the Dogfather is a lot cheaper than the FBM, at after-market prices.

Scrapyards are hard to get, so if you're not willing to search for one, just get a Ranger.

I haven't been able to find a ranger in stock anywhere.

Does anyone know a place that has either the ranger rd9 or the dogfather?

Thanks...

Hmm. Terse, but elegant. Poignant, yet accurate.

+1.

Oh ... about a DogFather. You should be able to just monitor the For Sale by Individuals forum here ... or the Scrapyard Forum. A DF or DFLE will come up, sooner or later.

I seem to recall Justin is in the midst of selling Ranger to ... I think Ontario? There are some Threads around here on that subject.
You could try this contact info:
Ranger Knives
325 North Linton Street
Blue Earth, MN 56013

email: justin@rangerknives.com

The Knife Outlet might have some: http://www.knifeoutlet.com/

Good luck.

EDIT: William.M has just put an RD-9 up for sale ... take a look: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=568969
