I'm trying to decide between the two. With the steel set aside. Which one of the two will be a better chopper/batoning knife?

I have a 911 and really like it, just by looking at the two knives though and with the experience I have with other choppers of similar sizes I can tell you:

FFG (Tops) are less likely to bind in wood than Saber
Longer blades (with all other things being equal) generate more power (longer lever)
Heavier blades (with all other things being equal) generate more power
52100 will have a decent edge holding advantage
5160 is tougher than 52100 (but, the 1111 at .25" thick that probably won't ever come into play)
The resp-C handle on the 1111 absorbs shock better IME
The TOPS has a more weight forward blade design which will also make it a better chopper, but more tiring to swing long term.

I don't see weight for the 1111, but since it keeps more of its steel (saber grind) it may actually be a similar weight to the longer Tops. Just by looking at them I'd think the tops could be the better chopper overall, but I like the 1111 better (due to handle, steel, and design). No way to know for sure with out a head to head test in a couple different mediums.

The 1111 is an underrated monster. It is very very versatile and is backed by the bussekin warranty.

I don't own either so take this with a grain of salt.

I have a 711 and I have to say that Res-C is one of the best handle materials for choppers. I would pick the Scrapyard just on this basis.

If these knives are like the usual fair from these two companies I highly suggest having the edge thinned by a custom maker(or by hand if you know how). The edges on Tops and Busse kin have all been about twice as thick as they need to be from the examples I've owned and seen in person. Unless of course you WANT to chop through cinder blocks. :D

Check with Be Prepared here in the forums. I believe he has both blades
