I'm considering investing in Sykco 711 as a utility survival knife, though the 'saber ultra convex' grind combined with the quarter inch overall thickness scares me a bit. I know they come shaving sharp from the factory but past experience tells me the angle is quite obtuse and not very efficient at slicing. Do you find the Sykco to be of practical grind for efficient cutting and maintenance? Thanks for the replies.

You might need to reprofile the edge to make it less obtuse. The resoprine handles are alot more comfy than I expected, the sr101 takes a good edge. They are kind of hit and miss on coming sharp though, could just be me but thats been my experiance with scrapyard, swamp rat and busse. I really like the ones I've kept. For the price it would make a good user.

Knives from the scrap yard are seldom good slicers with the exception f knives like the scrapmuk wiener dog etc... First of blade coating will kill the slicing ability of just about any knife. Second the 711 is made to be a beast, it looks very similar to the SOD which was a fantastic all around blade in my usage. Alot of busse kin blades do tend to have bad factory edges that are very obtuse but its nothing that can't be fixed.

I would say don't worry about it's slicing ability and go for it. It's a very inexpensive blade and you can beat on it with no worries. I know when I get some money I Will be ordering one!

Well, I have no experience with the 711 (not that I wouldn't like it, but right now that is for sure not in my budget).

That said, I DO have experience with my BK2, which is pretty similar in this area. For being as thick as it is, it actually cuts better than I expected. For anything I use a knife for in the woods, it does just fine. It makes feather sticks, traps, and firewood pretty well for its size.

Good luck with whatever you do :).

511 is one of my next buys as well... anyone have any word on it???

rustyrazor: I would say go for the 511. For it's size and 3/16" thickness it will make a tough all around working knife. I purchased a 711 for it's 'awesomeness' but it's way more knife than I'll ever need! At 1/4" thick and 7+" blade it is a beast not an all around work knife, at least not the kind of work that I'll ever use it for (just my opinion).
