I've been moving/helping moving/cleaning house the last three days. All of my roommates are white trash bastards- I helped them move out all their ****** couches, old TV's, boxes, beds.... And then as SOON as we got their stuff moved, they bailed, leaving me with the ass end of the mess in the house.

Our lease ended today, so I've been busting my balls to make sure the house was glamourous, cause I have full intention of getting my full share of the security deposit back. Landlords are mean.

So the past 3 days have been hell. Less than 4hours sleep/night, lifting heavy crap or cleaning nonstop, one meal/day, no shower :(.

This morning I went to wash the drywall spackling, dust, spots off of my prescription glasses. I wasn't thinking, I was tired, and I grabbed the first bottle of soap that was left on the inhumanely disgusting countertop in our kitchen. It was Lava, and I spread it all over my lenses. And now my lenses are lightly scratched up over the entire surface. It's not deep at all, but definately noticable when wearing- almost looks kind of "foggy."

So... now that I've ranted, how do I get these scratches out? I'm thinking a very, very minor abrasive, maybe like toothpaste? Or, perhaps Brasso?

I need my glasses. I suck with glasses, these are my second pair of frames this year. And no money, my CC balance is 6 times what I have in my bank account. :(

BTW. My house is ****ing glamourous.

the scratches are deeper than i thought.

dare i try brasso?

don't you have coatings on your glasses?
If you do then most probably brasso will remove it and spoil it...

How about calling your optometrist before you start experimenting?

If you have any sort of coating on the lenses (UV, anti-glare, etc.) they will need to be replaced - believe me I tried to "fix" some scratches on my wife's glasses recently with brasso, needless to say I ended up replacing the lens....

Have received several spams lateley concerning a liquid spray that will hide scratches on various lenses and glass/plastic things. Has anyone tried such?

erg.. if only I could spell...

As a fellow glasses wearer (plus having gone through similar events) it sounds like you may be S.O.L.

If the lenses are fairly new (i.e. within a year) sometimes you can go back to the optical shop and get it replaced at cheaper cost.

Happened with my last pair. I gouge them through some stupidity of my own, and the optical shop replaced the lens at half price.

Good luck!

i agree w/bladework,ya might as well go get them fixed, last time i had to get a lens it wasnt too bad, less than $50 IIRC, does suck though.

every time i pay high $$ for glassses i consider getting lased, its getting reasonable now imho.

Unfortunately, you cannot polish optical lenses without affecting the necessary light-bending properties of the lens in the area you're polishing; if there is any coating (almost all plastic lenses are coated in one or more ways), then just forget it. It is possible that an optician might be able to refinish the lens and preserve their effectiveness, but that's very unlikely.

Chalk it up to an expensive lesson.

My wife is an optician. She believes you are out of luck. This is an oversimplification of what she told me: the prescription is ground into the lense, so anything you would use to remove the scratches would change the prescription. She said that if there is a Walmart optical center near you you can get new lenses to fit your frame. She doesn't work for Walmart, but says they are the cheapest place to get replacements.

update.

i tried the brasso thing anyway, just to see what happens. it worked a little, so i'm thinking i'll just put some more time into it and see if i can get them better.

i'm not too worried about them because i wear contacts, so i only wear my glasses at night time when i'm at home or something.

this is just a temporary fix- i just don't have the money to get new lenses. on a side note, the new place i'm moving into hasn't opened up, although the lease for my old house ended at the end of april. i been sleeping in my car or in the library these past few days. apparently, my landlord seems to think it is ok to dishonor my lease, because it says i should have been able to move in on 01may. i'm too inexperienced to know what to do about this, and when i questioned my landlord, she said to "fend for myself."

and out of curiousity, how important are these UV coatings anyhow? I mean i understand they are great to have and all, but aren't there lots of people out there who have 20/20 vision? that is to say, don't lots of people go out "bare-eyed" and do just fine?
