So I recently sharpened one of my knives, and I managed to put a few scratches on the blade. Is there any good way to get these out? I tried searching the forums and couldn't find anything helpful, but post a link if you know of something.

It appears it's time for you to learn to finish a blade if you don't already know how. Start with some grit (200 maybe) and sand until the entire blade is that rough....ah crap just go to the stickies in the knifemaker forum and look for how to finish a knife. It's basically the same thing, sand out the scratches and then refinish. They'll explain it better than I ever could!

I don't want to scratch the entire blade, but I'll definitely check out the knifemaker's forums. Thanks guys

Those first scratches always kinda bother me, then they don't. :( What kind of knife Robert? Let's see some pics.

Okay, so you can't link to facebook. Let me borrow a camera from a friend, and I'll have pictures up here eventually... if I can figure it out. :)

Oh, and its a BM-940, so I'll have to figure out a way to make it look good again.

Why? Unless you want to keep it as a safe-queen, though it's a bit late for that if you sharpened it.

Knives that get used, get scratched. Comes with the territory.

If the blade (or metal handle) has a brushed finish, careful rubbing with a green scotch pad works well. If the scratch is deep, then you're looking at some serious refinishing.

If you use this knife, then don't worry about it. The first scratch sucks but that goes away. Just use it.

Well, its not a safe-queen, but it along with my 950 are the nicest knives I have. I usually carry around a spyderco endura or stretch. I guess if I carried it more often then it would just build character from use.

Just keep using it or sell it and get another one. It's probably not worth the effort or money to get it refinished. If it doesn't come out with something like Flitz, it's too deep anyway.

"too deep" for what?

Just leave it alone. Well-used knives have more character.

Rule #1: Without pictures it didn't happen.

That being said, it would depend on the finish of the knife. High gloss, 220 and tumbled, hand rubber 800, 400 and buffed?

You have to decide if you want to use it, or look at it.

A pretty knife is wonderful to look at, but you will always hesitate to really use it for fear that you will scratch its perfect blade....an ugly knife is wonderful to look at in its own right, but most easily appreciated every time you use it without fear of damaging the finish.

I have examples of both types...neither answer is wrong, but you have to decide which one is right for you and this knife.

This one is pretty...and will be scratched up the first time it gets used (probably tomorrow some time)

This one is thrashed...and MAN was if fun getting it to look this way!

When I first started really getting into blades, I used to freak out when I got a few scratches on my blades. But now, I just like using them hard. A few scratches make the knife look used and appreciated in my book.

If they're so ugly that you can't live with them - do what I did. "Call Benchmade" tell them it's incoming. They'll direct you to an online form. Fill it out and enclose $25 for a new blade and $5 return shipping and they'll install the new blade and do any maintaintance - cleaning. lube and adjust the pivot.

Pretty painless really, it took me 2 weeks back to my door for a new 940 Osborne blade to be installed. ;)
