Scratching the Barlow itch...

After seeing a couple threads/posts about barlows, I realized that I didn't have one in my "family." So, I browsed a little bit, and scored a couple of nice ones. The first is a Wostenholm IXL, single blade barlow.
Here's the eBay auction where I won it.
It's in great shape, with some nice, deep brown bone handles in flawless shape. Snaps like a rat trap, with no blade play (!), and the blade is almost full. From what I can tell, the liners & bolsters are steel, so it's a real working knife and has become my EDC.
As luck would have it, I went to a flea market on Sunday and found an old Case barlow that I got for 7 bucks. The blades are sharpened down to toothpicks, but it still has great walk & talk, and is in otherwise great shape. The handles are a nice orange-ish bone, with zero chips or cracks, just some light wear. After a good sharpening, it's become my new favorite whittling knife. I'll post pics when I can take some (don't have a camera....).
The third one was another eBay purchase, and I'm still waiting for it to arrive. I decided that I wanted to try out a 2-blade barlow as an EDC, so I'd have the option of a secondary pen blade. I usually carry a trapper, and I often find myself wishing for a smaller blade for lots of tasks. This could prove to be my new favorite; we'll see! Here's the auction, for the sake of reference.
Once I get ahold of a camera, I'll put 'em all together and snap some decent pics.
:D :D :D :D :D

Good choice of EDC. I've carried one, on and off, all my life.
Carrying a Barlow gives you a connection with history, and we forget history at our peril!

I totally agree with Waynorth. My old (1890's) Russell Daddy Barlow and 1930's vintage Russell spear point clip Barlow serve well as reminders of days gone by and a little piece of history.

I've been hanging out around here for only a couple of months now. Fell in love with slipjoints, but realized that there is a whole lot to the world of slipjoints, many patters to learn about, and then choose from. I have tried several in the last month or so. An english Jack, which I traded for the stockman, gunstock,which I returned(decided against the Queen D2), and now a barlow. I like the trapper a lot, but really can't get past the combination of the Barlow. I love having a smaller blade for some things, it definately has a place in my knife needs. The threeblade stockman I thought at first, "This is so practical", but the third blade is just kinda there, and I like the look of the two blade knives better. Now my only complaint about my new edc, much loved Case 6.5 Bonestag Barlow, is that I would like Barlow knives to be just a bit longer. Maybe 4 " or a little shy of that. Another half inch would be nice, but the 3 1'2 is a nice size in my pocket for EDC.
Anyway, all of that rambling to say, is that there is a charm, character, and great usefulness to the much overlooked Barlow it seems. I have grown to love them. Congratulations on a great purchase, that Sheffield Barlow looks cool. Enjoy the edc'ing of a barlow, I imagine you will find it as practical as I have learned in the last couple of weeks. Enjoy!

Very well said Waynorth.:thumbup::thumbup::cool:

Congrats on your new purchase PM. :thumbup:

Been really pleased with my Russell Barlow by Böker:thumbup:

Inexpensive, excellent finish and the sawn-bone handles are practical too.A real user and doer around the garden.Much prefer the spear point blade to the clip version.Sharpens well in carbon. You can get these in stag too:D

The Daddy Barlow offers larger handles and single blade configuration for those who prefer something heftier.

My barlow itch never seems to stay scratched. Someone posted about the new Case barlow with 154-CM steel so I just had to scratch. It had the wire-edge, rough thing going on out of the box but with just a little work it smoothed out and is now nice and sharp, really sharp.
