Screetch Owl in the sun..

I've never posted over here but on my way home thru rural southern PA I saw a screetch owl sitting on the side of the road!!!!!! It seemed to be warming itself in the sun! Little bugger let me walk up to about 6 feet away, ran back to the car but it flew into a neighboring tree then lit out before I could take any pics. I thought it might be a clump of ice that fell off a truck. NOPE ...little guy was just sitting there. Gave me the old puzzled head tilt when I walked up.

Maybe this isn't wilderness, but this is only the second time I've seen one up close. They are all around my house calling to eachother.

Some screech owls can be extremely tolerant of close human approaches. They're probably close to you more often than you realize; they're easy to miss, because they're small and well camouflaged.

Nice find, armourer2. Known to be there, yet hard to spot.

Evolute, this is amazing shot. Thanks for sharing.

The first time I got some up close time with a screetch owl was years ago: My mother caught one that had been hit by a car, stunned and injured its beak. We had it in a large dog cage in the dining room where we had to feed it live mice and chicken livers. The little guy survived to fly off after a few weeks. Very gentle bird, except when mice where around.

Still can't belive that this one was just sitting in the road.
