Screw in stud for "Wave"

After buying my waved Endura I have become a huge fan of this feature. I noticed some pics that were posted from a show with Spyderco that had a short thin stud screwed into the back of the blade. That stud was the "wave" It gave me a great idea on how to make every knife I own have the wave feature.

I need to drill and tap the hole and then simply screw a stud in. It will be much cleaner than a zip tie when completed and should not be too difficult. It could also be removed by simply unscrewing it.

Has this already been done by someone other than Spyderco? I searched, but did not find anything. If anyone has done this please post pics and give me pointers.

See the P'Kal on this link

Good luck. Most good knife steel is nearly as hard as the taps I can buy around here. I suppose a broken off tap would work as a wave, but I think it would be uglier than a zip tie. Just a thought.

What do the pros use? Do they make diamond taps? What else would work? I guess they would drill and tap it before the steel was hardened.

That would be Ernest Emerson

He popularized using the thumb disk, and owns the patent on the Wave.

Emerson owns the Wave just like Spyderco owns the Round thumb hole pull.

There is an Emerson with a thumb disk in the for sale area of this forum (mine) but it pre-dates the Wave.

I like the Thumb Disk quite a bit. It would be pretty industrious of you to be able to do that. Just realize you are dealing with someone's patent. You can do whatever you want to your own knife or knives. Just don't get carried away and try and start selling a bunch of stuff that is modified like that.

Hi CMSpeedy,

The blade is drilled and tapped for the "wave" before it's hardened.

Also, I might add that the "wave" is a patented feature of Emerson Knives. We have received permission for useage and pay a royalty for that useage to Emerson knives.

Hi Steven,

The Shivworks P'kal is very close, but we are still a few months off from delivery. We just finished the trainer pilot. All is looking good at this time.

The project has been challenging. The ball bearing lock holder (no name yet) has evolved into a very nice lock. Eric has invented a refinement that we'll be applying for additional patents on the system.

I thought that I was OK as long as I don't perform this on anyone else's stuff. Am I wrong? I don't know too much about patents.

Awesome! Can't wait to see it finished!

If you want to get technical, any use of a patented mechanism without authorization from the patent owner is a violation.

Patents are mostly about money, so if you aren't selling anything, I don't think you would have any problems.

Just had a much better idea. Instead of spending $500 on the tools I will need to do this to a dozen knives I will just buy $500 worth of new knives.

I agree that it would be a pain to try and drill my knives with hardened S30V on most of my blades. If I could even find taps that small I doubt seriously that they would drill in this stuff. They probably could make some out of some high tech material (Diamond, Ceramic...) but now we are talking mega bucks, for what, a dozen waved knives. I'm also sure that I would make a few mistakes, and in the process ruin a few good blades.

If anyone thinks that they can do it, you can try to sway me back by posting your pics, but I am a little scared of ruining my knives.

I do like the P'Kal and will wait to see how much. I'll probably get that, a Caly 3, and a Pacific Salt. That should keep me busy for a while.
