The first number in the "code" is an old wire size. Like the 6 in 6-32. The second number is the threads per inch. The 32 in 6-32 is threads per inch. I'm told that the wire size's have changed in the way lumber has, a 2X4 no longer measures 2inches by four inches. I dont work with wire so I realy dont know!!!!
The best thing to help with all the numbers is a tap and drill chart. They give all the decimal sizes for number, letter and fractional drills as well as giving you tap drill sizes. The chart will also tell you the diameters of the number threads as I mentioned above. I wouldn't hurt to get a metric one too!! They are cheap and look damn impressive hanging on the shop wall!!!
