Screw type pivot pins, a few questions

Hey guys I've got a few projects going that are going to be ready for handles soon, adn of course that means pivot pins. I've got screw type pins to put in them. The kind with 2 torx screws that screw into a threaded barrel. Looking at them, the heads of the screws aren't much bigger than the barrel. So it doesn't seeem like it would be very strong if I just drilled a hole the size of the areel clear through both scales. I have taps to fit the screws though. So should I grind the barrel down to the thickness of the blade, or a few thousandths over, and then drill the scales and tap them for the screws? That seems like it would be the strongest setup, but I'm worried about messing up the threads inside the barrel. So how do you guys who know what your doing do it?
One other thought I've had is to put a small washer between the head of the screw and the scale, and leaving the barrel alone.
Any help is appreciated.

I haven't measured them but the barrel is probably close to 3/8" long and the tang of the blade is slightly under 1/8" thick.
Now that I've gotten to thinking about it, the screw heads probably overhang the barrel as much as a well peened pin, maybe even more so. So unless somebody tells me its wrong, I'll just drill the scales to fit over the ends of the barrel. That would give more threads for the screws to bite into also, rather than only haveing each screw held in by 1/16" of threads.
