Is there an easy way to scribe centerlines on tapered peices, such as a tapered tang or a forged distal blade taper?

Thanks

John

On some forged blades, I just end up eyeballing it and checking with a height guage as I grind.

If you can establish a flat and parallel ricasso, you can base your center line from it. Basically place the blade on your surface plate, holding the ricasso flat on the plate, and use your height guage to scribe your center line as usual.

I usually eyeball it on forged blades as well. I am thinking more along the lines of on a tapered tang that was going to get file worked. I went to seminar with Larry Fuegen yesterday and I have become interested in file work. I have never been a fan of file work until I saw the stuff that Larry can do. WOW

Uncle Al at Riverside Machine make a scribe that does exactly what you need:

Place the tool over the blade with a dowel pin on each side. Twist the tool and the scribe is in the center of the blade! It is very simple, easy and inexpensive.

That is what I do,too.
I use an edge scribe that is hand held. I scribe several lines to use for the depth of different file cuts ( thorns, vine curves, etc.).
