Hey BF--I found this gem in the bottom of a box today...almost tossed it. It was either a gift or I bought it late 1970s or 1980s...I don't remember. It was WAY before my interest knives.

I searched the internet for the design but could not find it. The scales appear to have dulled or yellowed. Looks like brass bolsters, no finger notch, blade is 2.1, OA 5.2.

So can you help me identify?

Thanks....Mike

Not a Barlow. I'd simply say a clip point lockback. If it were a couple of inches larger, I might call it a folding hunter
From the pics, it looks like the bolsters are nickel silver or stainless steel and the liners are brass.
What information is on the blade tang stamp?

My eyes might be playing tricks on me but does it say "barlow" on the tang stamp? As in a brand name.
Also are the scales yellow delrin (plastic) or bone?
I love that leaping stag.
nice find.

Looks like BARLOW to me.

Also, "Stainless USA."

See my message to Brother Jim regarding tang stamp.

The scales look and feel more plastic but I don't have any scrimshaw to compare. It looks more etched than carved.

Is delrin similar to corelon? I see a lot of less expensive Buck customs with corelon (sp?).

I did find the design but it's on a 3inch blade scrimshaw ...

I think the Barlow reference is to do with the tipe of scrimshaw and not the knife . google Barlow scrimshaw .

Even though it says STAINLESS USA on the tang, my bet is it was made in Japan. I'm not finding much through google except there was a company in California (the USA part) but their knives were made in Japan (at some point). If someone could look up "Barlow Stainless Japan" in Levine's guide, there may be more information.

I believe they would have had an original scrimshaw and that has been reproduced en masse by a printing /stamping type process. Same as the old Schrade scrimshaws of which there were many.
The original would be attributed to an artist but he didn't carve all of them.

Yes Delrin similar but not the same. Del is an older version. Corelon is a newer development and they can get the amazing range of psychodelic patterns and colours in it.

There is a company called "Barlow-Norwood" that sells knives and multi-tools, and other promotional items. Often with company logos. There is no connection to the Barlow knife pattern that I know of.

Nice looking scrimshaw, though. :)

I'll do some more looking around. Looks like it's something that could have been sold in a souvenir type store. We did a lot of RVing on the West Coast in those years and that's where I may have got it.

I would like find out if Barlow made a 2 inch non nail nick in the 70s-80s.

I have one of these with a different image. I bought it in a souvenir shop off the beach in Wilmington, NC. Plastic scales brass liners non descript stainless.

One of the scales fell off, reglued with epoxy.

It was relegated to the bottom of my knife drawer, nothing more than a memento of a visit to the coast.

It is nothing of value otherwise.

Barlow as a brand name is not uncommon. I have seen knives, lighters, money clips, etc marked like this. I have a belt buckle laying around somewhere that's marked "Barlow". They even made some stuff for the Boeing company as souveniers.

That's about what I've decided. I did find this scene on a couple of REAL Barlow scrimshaw knives but the knife was larger than this one.

My wife says she remembers us buying it along the Oregon coast on one of out RV trips.

I've cleaned this one up and moved it to my knife case.

Thanks to everyone who added some thoughts to this thread. BFC is the best.
