Scrimshaw on a Newt Livesay Knife

I've been working on developing a style that is new and different for scrimshaw. I did this Trompe l’oeil scrim on a Newt Livesay knife with ivory micarta slabs. I used my daughter’s eye as my model. Trompe l’oeil (pronounced tromp loy) is a French term that means “to deceive the eye”. I attempted to make it look like the handle was ripped open with an eye looking through it. The broken pieces displaced by the hole appear to be casting a shadow on the knife handle.

Wow!!!!!!

You are very talented. Do you have any more pictures of your work?

Very nice, kinda reminds me of some of tattoo artwork that looks as if its coming out of the flesh. Great work.

Brilliant work.

Tompe l'Oiel will always be "en vouge". It is timeless. Dates back to building interiors in Ancient Rome.

This has great potential....

Any other ideas/design you have kickin' around? Would love to see 'em...on or offline.

Nice job!

My dad and I used to make pistol grips from ivory micarta and then scrimshaw them. Also did bolo ties, buckles, and other assorted stuff. Mostly animals (loved doing tigers). Always wanted to do some classy nekkid chicks. My stipple technique was just gettin' polished when we moved and I stopped scrimshawing. I miss it. Should start up again...

scrimmer, I've got the mate to your Livesay knife. It's available if anyone is interested.

It's signed "L Scoggins 04", do you remember doing this one?

edit: this blade is listed on your website as "Deadman's Hand"

Wow, that's incredible artwork. I didn't realize that you could work Micarta in that way. How is it done?

Just a friendly reminder - you need a gold membership to sell stuff here, and even then you have to do it in the right forum.

I wonder about this as well. Does it matter what the material of the Micarta is (i.e. paper, linen, etc.)? I was led to believe by one scrimshander that you couldn't get lasting, stable results with Micarta. I've ALWAYS wanted to get an Ivory Micarta knife scrimmed (cheaper than real ivory, and better for my applications), but they put doubt into my mind. They basically said you could scrim the micarta, but it won't last more than a year of constant carry/use. Please let us know your thoughts!!!

thanks for the heads-up...

been trying to figure out how to register for gold membership by using paypal. no reply on how to do this.

We don't do business with PayPal. (PayPal gives a portion of their profits to anti-gun organizations.) You can pay for a membership with a credit or debit card or a money order. Click on "Upgrade your forums experience, and help support this site" at the top of the page for details, or go to the Bladeforums Service & Support forum for more help.

was trying to avoid CC, but that seems to be path of least resistance :D

gold membership coming up..
