Scrimshaw on ivory

If this is the wrong forum, I apoligize up front.

Two Questions:
1. I have a folder that I believe has ivory scales. I can not see any hairline cracks radiating from the pins. Is there an easy way to tell if it is ivory?

2. I want to have my son's name scrimmed on one scale for an Eagle Scout gift and something else on the other side. How time consuming is scrimshaw and would you recommend someone?
