Scrimshaw question

I hope this is the right place for this question and that some will have a definitive answer for me.

I have a custom folder with mammoth ivory handles on which there is scrimshaw on both sides of the handle. If I use the knife regularly, do I run the risk of ruining the scrimshaw? I would only use it with clean hands, but am unsure if the oils from handling the knife over time would cause the scrimshaw to either run or fade on the mammoth inlay medium.

Thank you for any insights you folks can provide me. :)

Continued use and even light abrasion (ie. human skin to Ivory) will over time show wear and fading. It may take years, but it will happen.

Thanks Paul. I was afraid someone might say that.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can protect it, assuming it even can be protected in use?

The hand abrasion will take a very, very long time, many, many years. Since it is a folder you might consider either a soft fabric pocket pouch or better yet a leather lined, leather pocket pouch to keep it safe from other objects in your pocket.

Then again, the patina left by your use may increase it's charm a thousand fold. Particularly after you have passed.
