I never use to pay much attention to the Scrimshaw knives, but for some reason lately I've really been drawn to them.

I haven't done much searching yet, but it seems the ones in the black boxes are older and have the Carbon steel blades. The ones in the blue boxes are later versions with stainless steel blades. Am I correct on this ?

Also, anything else I should know as I start picking up a few ? I don't plan on trying to collect all of them, but right now am looking at the ones that have Ducks and Geese on them.

Thanks Mike

Note that these are NOT hard and fast rules. There was some overlapping of box design use with the black box being continued for SFOs and some Limited Editions for quite some time.

Ducks and geese will be a tough one. An awful lot of scrimmed knives have those birds on them including some for Ducks Unlimited, etc.

Thanks Codger. I really like the first edition box. I've never seen one like that before, and I would imagine they don't come around very often.

I didn't realize there was that many different versions with the ducks and geese. No longer than I have been looking at them, I think I have already come across about 8 different version.

I think this is going to be a lot of fun searching these out

More often than you might think. Refine your eBay searches to look for them by using the year of issue as a part of the search Schrade Scrimshaw + (1977, 1978) Search in title and description too.

Thanks for the tip Codger. I appreciate it.
Actually I feel kind of stupid, because I've never tried searching that way before. Now I have to go try it, and see what else I come up with :D

Most of the first scrims also have unique tang numbers not reused later. Look at the Schrade Collectors site at the scrim flyers. This will also help you identify the waterfowl issues you are looking for using their original ad materials. Don't depend on the seller's knowledge of year of issue.
