Scrimshaw questions

I know that originally, scrimshaw was done to whales teeth, by sailors. I've also seen it done to ivory knife handles, and lately white micarta. Is stag that is sanded smooth a suitable surface for scrimshaw? I was thinking of getting a inexpensive stag handled knife to have a picture of my dog out on it.
