Hi Bill, Hate to get all "splitting-the-hairs" with you, but they are called "scrimshanders" anyway, what is your subject of the scrimshaw, I have a very good one that I use, that I would recommend. Like many scrimshanders, he specializes in only one thing, does only Alaskan wild game. He does very good wolves, bears and moose etc. I gave him a large walrus tusk one time and asked him to do an ancient eskimo dog sledder mushing a team of dogs on the ice and got back a herd of caribou. He don't do people. Let me know if you want his contact info.

I would urge you to at least check out the work of Lori Ristinen. Some of her work is featured in David Darom's books, although you may not have heard of her. She puts out the best African animals around. Try loriristinen.com.

Thanks guys,

Mark, I'm a knifemaker by day and a coon hunter by night, I'm just glad I got it close enough so you knew what I was talking about. :D:D
I don't know what he wants done, he just called me and asked if I knew of anyone and I told him I'd check on here to ask for recommendations. Its a piece he already has I guess, not something I'm making. If you'd send me his contact info I'd pass it along to my guy and he could call him.

Thank you,

Bill

Bob Hergert. Look up Scrimshander.com. With any of these known artists the price will likely be high and the wait will be long. Kind of like the top knifemakers!

I take this opportunity to introduce you to a good friend, Cristian Silva. Currently being devoted to screem.

I'll show you some photos.
I hope you like it.

Along with those mentioned, some of the best in my opinion are (in no specific order): Gary "Garbo" Williams, John Stahl, +1 Linda Karst Stone & Lori Ristinen & Dave Villiard, a fairly new scrimshander Katherine Plumer, Sandra Brady, Roni Dietrich and Sharon Burger.

I've seen great work by ALL of them and own one by John Stahl.

Bill - based on what the customer wants scrimmed, different artists have specialties such as birds of pray, big cats, snakes and fantasy things like dragons....

+2 Linda Karst-Stone and +1 Sandy Brady (no order preference meant). Check out their sites for a good idea of the type of work they do. About a 3-4 month turnaround with Linda last time she did a project for me. Not sure with Sandy, but she'll let you know (as will Linda). www.scrimshaw-by-sandra-brady.com Linda's site info in second post. They'll also be willing to answer any questions you might have about subject, materials, and cost.

Thank you everyone for the help, I am going to pass all these
recommendations along to my guy and let him try to figure out which one to pick.

Bill

Bill, I had this done on a pig sticker Dave Pitts made for me. It was done by his son Chris, if your interested let me know and I will put you in touch. Whats more he aint too expensive!!
