I inherited a scroll saw (crappy early 80's Made in Taiwan Delta). The blades are held by friction (no pins). Now, I've never owned a scroll saw before, and on the few practice runs I've tried (straight cuts on 1/4" poplar - nothing crazy) the blade pops out of the top holder within seconds. I've cranked down on the screws as much as possible, but this keeps happening. What the heck am I doing wrong?

11.5 tooth/inch skip tooth blades, blade flats pointed down. I don't understand what you mean by feed, I'm just slowly feeding the wood in through the front, under the blade guard, straight cuts. I confirmed by reading the manual that i have the correct blade length.

You have the right tooth profile. Maybe your saw grip pinch point has worn out (not sure the correct terminology). Have you used this inherited saw before?

Get a Hegner if you plan to do much scroll saw work. They are pricey as hell, but worth it. My wife makes 1/12-scale miniature furniture, and what this Hegner saw of hers can do is incredible-- intricate turns, tiny inlays!! And vastly easier to use than any other we have seen. Blade changes are fast and easy, ditto speed control. Built like a little tank. Sometimes the factory has deals on saws that have been returned, which is how we got ours.

No, I haven't used it before. Maybe too much tension? I guess that shouldn't matter, because you'd expect the blade to break before it slipped in a properly functioning saw?

That's not in the cards right now, gotta make due with what I have. Thank you though.

Possibly either the clamp is worn out, or there is a piece of broken blade jammed in the clamp.
