Scuffs in the coating, to clean or not...

I did some chopping with my BK2 and there is residual wood marks on the coating of the blade. Other than aesthetics, is there any reason to clean it?

I never clean mine other than to wipe it off with a cloth or on my pant leg, and its fine. The residual dust/wood shouldn't harm the blade or coating in any way. However, if there is a noticeable amount of sap I'd make sure it got cleaned off that way it doesn't collect or rub off inside the sheath.

Exactly what I thought, but wanted a 2nd opinion. Thank you

muphasta,
I'm with Tdhurl on this. I realized pretty quickly with actually using the knife that there was going to be way too much work on getting all that wood residue off the blade. I just give a good old wipe down with some CLP and a paper towel (removes most residue). For the heavy sap I try some alcohol and it seems to help. I know the blade will be fine, I just don't want the sheath all gummed up.

Aside from possible termite infestation, I can't imagine how it's hurting a thing.

Honestly, unless there is a lot of sap or other sticky crap that will attract things to the blade that will potentially damage it (sand, grit, bears, etc...) I leave it be.
