You can't get more traditional than a Scythe!!
So I am posting here.

I am beginning to live on a small holding of 1 1/2 acres (6 Dunnum), and I want to buy a scythe for the work.

Who knows where to buy a scythe?

That will be quite the workout. I think you may need to have a custom one made. I would make sure it fit your height.

I would recommend a 2 stroke straight shaft string trimmer with a brush cutter blade, but that is not traditional.

Ah, heck, just get a Sebenza!:D

Good luck, and post pics of your Scythe. Maybe it can have it's own sub forum.

Esav,

I did Google but only two English sites came up
These two US sites did not appear

Thanks

And ScytheSupply is in Maine, so you know they're awesome! :D:thumbup:

Also, they're faster than string mowers, not to mention quieter and lighter! An acre is a unit of land measurement because that was the average-sized amount of land a skilled scythe-operator could clear in a day!

It will be really good exercise though but tough going as my limited experience with scythes and sickels showed me that they need a far bit of sharpening quite frequently.

Another thing, watch out for snakes in that undergrowth:eek::D

Do they have snakes in Israel? If so, what kind?

Make sure you do not harm the snakes with the scythe. I love snakes, they are fun to catch. I take my boys out for king and gopher snake catch and release! It is a blast. Occaisionally we come across a rattler, but they always warn you, giving ample time to stay away. Cannot ask for a better temperment from a poisonous animal.

Good news
I found locally and purchased an long Austrian grass scythe for $70.

It is very interesting learning how to use it.
It is not a chopping action like a machete
And not a slashing like a bush clearer.

You actual slice with the curve of the blade.
Starting with the first 1/3 of the blade, you turn in a circular motion using your hips
And the edge of the blade runs across the weeds and undergrowth and slices them.

Good fun playing with a big blade!!!
I will post photos and more comments later

If you've never used one before, I'd suggest you ask someone who has. There are a few tricks. The only one trick I know, I learned from the ridicule an old man was heaping on a surbanite turned country boy...get it sharp and sharpen often. The duller the blade, the more work you do.
