With Mrs Pit all dressed up for some wet nasty weather we headed out today for a coastal hike~

Lots of timber had washed up along the shoreline~

I love how the wet weather brings out the amazing colours of the Arbutus~

Lots of wet slippery exposed tree roots made the trail quite a challenge~

Some nice views to be had~

As we checked out one particular view spot we caught sight of two Stellar sea lions~

They almost looked like Bears in the water, massive creatures !

Lots of old mans beard hanging from the trees~

Man if maisy would have been in the water I would have been way more worried than snickers epic otter confrontation.

I had one take a salmon off me no more than 20ft from the boat as a kid with the old man, if you have never been up close and personal it is shocking how big and intimidating they are. I would be very afraid if I was swimming and had a couple show up, I have heard they are way more aggressive and territorial than a regular seal.

Like an aquatic bear for sure, I bet the average male sea lion weighs a fair bit more than the average black bear.

Cool pictures Pit . I like the sea lions. We only have then in zoo's here in the Texas.

By the way. You got me hooked on Earl Gray Tea.:D

Thanks for posting.

The herring spawn is going on now along the central part of eastern Vancouver Island . The whole foreshore turned turquoise for the last several days from all the herring milt in the water , billions of herring ! This annually attracts large numbers of California and Stellar sea lions . When the wind is right you can smell them by the stench of ammonia.

In general they do not attack but I would avoid the areas where they haul out in the breeding season of June/July . The males are very good at threatening … scary to have one shoot up out of water beside you in a kayak.

Cool pics of the Sea Lions. That pic with the set wood really does bring out its color. Neat pic of that.

Thanks for the info buddy, I wasn't aware of that.:encouragement:

That's a neat pic. There are some vivid colors in your area. Going to need to try and get to that area sometime to see them.

Awesome pics man, I used to love to sit and watch the manatees in the water down in Florida, never seen a sea lion in person but I think they may be similar in their actions. Mrs. Pit looks like she was being prepared for you to keep her out there all day. I love how the rain makes a lot of colors pop, I'm looking forward to the spring colors here. Old man's beard looks a lot like the Spanish moss in the deeper south eastern parts of the U.S., and seriously dude, how old can you be?
