Here's a small knife that I made today, gonna heat treat tomorrow. First time working with Micarta and boy does it stink! Even with a respirator and good ventilation...YUCK!

A nod goes to Atomic Zero on USN and Ferret for influences here. Thanks! :)

Linen or canvas....I don't really know. I bought it a long time ago and I'm not really sure what the difference is just by looking at it. But I'm guessing canvas. It gets rough and ratty edges when you hog it down. I finished it to 220 grit shoeshine style and it has a decent look to it. Should I go finer? Bead blast it? What else can you do with this stuff?

Looks like a great little utility knife. I like it's overall shape. What type steel did you choose for it?

Yeah, nice lines, Peter. Micarta is one of my favorites, always dependable. That looks like canvas to me. It's nice and grippy - good choice I think.

Thanks for the hints Tom. I tried WD40 on it but didn't like it. It seemed to diminish the pattern. I'll try some oil though. Funny how on one side the grain shows up better than the other but they have equal amounts of sanding. It's a mystery to me....

The knife is only about 3 1/2" long in the handle and around the same in blade length. 1/8" thick by 1" wide S30V finished to 80 grit here. I'll take it down to 120 before I heat treat this morning. I'm finding that the S30V sands a whole lot easier BEFORE heat treat rather than after. :)

peter, i have found that even solid color micarta can have a grain of sorts. i cut one piece and then flip it over and cut the other. that way any diff in the micarta will both equal on the knife.
