Thanks for your question. AUS steels are world-class Japanese manufactured steels and 440 steels are mostly US manufactured. Since our knives are mostly Japanese made, we use AUS steels in those knives. AUS steels have close 440 counterpart steels and some people and companies will loosely interchange those terms.

Don't be afraid of AUS-6 steel...I have a SOG Tigershark who's blade is AUS-6 steel, and it shows NO signs of "rust", is sharp as a (LARGE) razor, holds an edge well, and is easy to re-sharpen. Sure, there ARE "better" blade-steels, but this AUS-6 that is used in the SOG knives isn't all that bad!.
