Seal Pup sheath options

Hello all.

First off I should thank everyone who posts on this forum for sparking my interest in the manly art of cutting tools ;)

I recently purchased my first decent quality fixed blade knife, a Seal Pup. It came with a molle webbing backed nylon sheath that dosen't really suit belt wear very well imho. The SOG factory websight lists two other options: the kydex sheath, which seems as though it would work, but I've heard complaints about the "groove" feature allowing sand and grit into the sheath, and the leather sheath, which I think I'd prefer, but I didn't see a picture of that specific sheath on the websight (might have missed it), and I was wondering about its retention system and overall construction.

Has anyone had firsthand experience with the leather sheath? Are there any major reasons to avoid it? Are there any pictures of this specific sheath?

Thanks for giving my post a look, sorry it was long winded, even sorrier if it was a dumb question, I'm new here.

Hi Cluckey, welcome

The main disadvantages of leather sheaths that I can think of is that it is not as wear resistant as kydex or nylon, it is not suitable to store knives in the sheath for long term storage since leather sheaths can restain moisture and the sheath might require maintenance since it is made of leather

Thank you both for your fast replies, hmmm moisture is bad, but so is grit right? I definately like the design of the leather sheath better. I suppose I'll chew it over a bit longer. Thanks again

Hope I didn't make them sound too bad as they are still perfectly fine in most circumstances :o

cluckey,

Welcome !!

Leather works just fine for me, most of my knives (SOG and otherwise) have a leather sheath. No short-term problems encountered to date, but I haven't had 'em for 30 years to give any long-term observations and opinions.

Cheers,

Carl

Thanks again all, for the replies.

johnu2,

Don't worry, you were just stating the facts. I appreciate that.

New Pig Hunter,

Thanks for the welcome. And for the positive testimonial on behalf of leather. There's something that just seems classier about a leather sheath rather than a kydex or nylon carrier. I think the scales may be tipping in the favor of leather.

ashtxsniper,

The only (non-custom) aftermarket sheaths I've come across are the Spec Ops combat/survival master sheaths. Any opinions on those used with smaller knives like the Pup? I hadn't thought of checking Blackhawk or any other gear makers as I'd only heard of Spec Ops really going into the area of tactical sheaths. I'll have to give the other companies offerings a look-see.

Thanks for the opinions, it helps alot in the selection process.

Bradd.
