My brother has apparently bought me a seal pup(Christmas) and I was wondering what you SOG fans thought of the knife. The only SOG I've owned was a Flash 2, so I'm not very knowledgeable regarding the brand and it's offerings. Is the texturing grippy when wet? Will the knife do well for light/medium camp duty(I'm not abusive with knives but like sturdy tools).

well, when leaving the house for a walk I open a drawer and there I find an ESEE 4, a Grohmann, a Fällkniven S1 and a Seal Pup. I ALWAYS pick the Seal Pup.

I have owned many many knives. I have owned multiplues of very few knives. The SOG Seal Pup is one of them.

That's quite an endorsement. What is it about it that makes you lean toward the seal pup over the others? If I were to pick out of your drawer, I'd likely go with the ESEE 4 or the Fällkniven S1 myself.

Sounds like, barring ergo issues, I'll like the knife then. Did you get the nylon sheath; if so do you think a leatherman wave would fit in the pocket?

ESEE 4: I don't like the ergonomices of the handle, too heavy for its size.
Fällkniven: really like the knife, picking the Pup is more an emotional decision.

Pup: light and sturdy, I personally like the serrations even for outdoor use.
the Seal pup is a keeper, the ESEE will go.

The serrations don't bother me too much. I've used partially serrated blades for camp use in the past and had no problems; if I have a choice, I'll usually go plain edge though. Does the thumb ramp/guard get in the way if you place your thumb on the spine of the blade?

My powerlock fits into it nicely. I think the wave is smaller than a powerlock right?

For those of you with the nylon sheath, how are you attaching it to your belt? Using the middle molle loops or the top?

I can honestly say that I have sold lots of them and never ever heard a complaint or had one returned. Me personally though, would grab the ESEE-4 every time over the others.

I'm not 100% sure but I believe the Powerlock is bigger than the Wave. Thanks for the info.

According to leatherman.com the wave is 4 inches in length and according to sogknives.com the powerlock is 4.6". So as long as it's not terribly thicker you'll have no problem.

I love my Seal Pup. I think you will love yours. Scary sharp, well balanced, and feels like an extension of your hand. Yes, your Wave will fit. I think you will have a Merry Christmas.

You guys were right, the seal pup is a pretty nice knife. I have not had the chance to really test it out but I can pretty much tell from handling it that it will do what I ask of it. Did SOG change the blade a bit? That long flat choil that I've seen in all of the pics of the pup online is absent on mine.

I believe it's the seal pup, as the the spine of the blade doesn't have the rasp/ridges and the word elite isn't written on the blade.

Seal Pup is a solid user blade! I owned one in college and sold it to the mailroom guy who was getting into camping with his family and was looking for something tried and true. I was honored to sell it to him, but I do miss that knife. This is all over 10 years ago by the way and the knife was Seki-Japan origin.
