Good day.

I'm interested in this knive the SOG Seal Team Elite with the Kydex Sheath.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001EICW7G/ref=ox_sc_sfl_title_4?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

I'm interested to find if it is of quality / worth the money for:

- some (light) wood cutting - withstanding (some) battoning, camping etc the main advantages/ purposes of a fixed blade/hunting knive.
- i started to look for a Ka-Bar 1213 but i want Stainless.

1. Is the AUS-8 good on this particular knive?
2. Can i sharpen it on the Spyderco Sharpmaker?
3. Any info/feedback on this knive is of great help.
4. What about the SOG Super Bowie ? Worth the price over the SEAL?

5. Any other recommandations / other models ?

Thank you.

Hello

For your intended purpose, I would get the SOG Northwest Ranger. It is almost the perfect camp knife.

The SEAL Team Elite is a fantastic blade, but it is more of a combat utility knife.

It will sharpen fine in the Spyderco. IMHO I think a 5" blade is a little small for battoning, but your experience may vary. Also I prefer a V or dropped V bevel for the blade grind verses a concave or hollow grind for that task.
If your considering something as big as the Super SOG you might take a look at the SOG Force.

I too am looking at/for a Seal Team Elite and Possibly a Tigershark as well.

But for camping chores, it's hard to beat my Sog Force. Plain edge, full tang, strong point, decent sheath, just a nice package.

It will handle most any camp task well enough,

Not as tacti-cool as the STE, but worth a look,

A big +1...The SOG NW Ranger is my one and only SOG but it has been superb as a budget camp/pack fixed beater blade. SOG seems to know how to HT AUS 8 very well and I've really used & abused mine hard for everything from food prep to battoning partially frozen firewood, and outside of some handle nicks and blade scratches, it has performed admirably. Very easy to get back an extremely sharp edge with any method/stone and is largely rust free with very little care. For around $55/60...one could do much worse. Only con: sub-par leather sheath.

Perfect.
Thanks guys for the info.

Yes the Tigershark is what i need better.

Any other sheaths for it ?
Can i use the knive in that sheat without the handguard?

@ sac troop: 5" ???? You're mixing it up with a seal pup!

True, True!
I'm pre-disposed to carrying a Seal Pup Elite as a camp knife because of its weight and handiness, must have been a Freudian slip. It's short coming would be in something like battoning because of the shorter length. I usually have other options for splitting wood at those times. When it comes to carrying a bigger knife in the woods I'm very attached to a seventy year old Cattaraugus 225Q from WW2 that was very beat up when I acquired it but is as solid today as the day it was made.
