I am trying to seal (satisfactory), leather compression sheaths for a pocket knives. Is there some great product that will allow my images to withstand the rigors of belt carry? (Scrapes, seat belt scratches etc.)

In the past, I have worked with leather stamping type tools, currently trying Dremel carving into the leather, so that the dyes will hold an image. Then using dyes, Fiebing"s Dark Brown Antique Finish, acrylic paint (watered down usually).

I can't think of any coating that is capable of resisting abrasive wear without some moderate damage or scuffing. There is a lacquer coating that was sold by Tandy as Neat Lac and is now sold as Wyoshene by another company. It will build up a bit thicker coating than most products and holds up to general use well. That said, it will dissolve acrylics if applied over them by rubbing and it will show signs of scratches and abrasions over time. Deep ones will get to your images. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Thanks for the advice. I have used making tape to pull off some of the finish that comes with the untreated leather and it creates patterns like an 'elephant skin' type, but the regular leather sealer coat (Tandy) takes it away. I was hoping to preserve this effect and also seal the painting/dye, etc. * I have used Mod Podge: Matte-Mat-Mate on other craft products which has a glue type effect and is not shiny, but have not tried it on leather. (It is only simi-water resistant.) I'll keep experimenting.

Just an FYI. A couple of things to be careful about in your research. Anything that contains petroleum in any form will cause long term damage to the leather. Also, any product that does not flex well will probably cause you some problems over time on on leather articles that are used.
