A friend of mine gave me a bunch of exotic hardwood scraps which I plan to use for knife handles. I was planning seal this wood with clear epoxy that is designed to soak in and harden old rotten wood. Will this stuff work well on hardwood knife handles? Any suggestions?

try PEG, a compound which replaces the water in the cells of woods, it takes a good finish..

it is available from wood turning supply houses.. comes in solid form and becomes a liquid at about 105 degrees.. has a long shelf life and is easy to use.. buy the directions for 50 cents.. they are worth it.

Check out your local shipwright store or get a copy of Wooden Boats magazine. There are some superb penetrating/sealing compounds (liquid) available for marine applications that penetrate and harden inside porous woods...

I have used an acrylic sealer called "Fix-it" for a number of years now when I work with wood. Porous, open grained wood such as maple burl benefit from it. I have also used the thin Super Glue in the past. This takes on the look of plastic and may not be desirable to some folks that like the look of natural, hand rubbed wood.
