I couldnt check the steel with a file this morning but I was so tired that I left 2 blades in the oven all night. Will this harm the temper in the steel?

I left a tomahawk head in my oven for 6 hrs once. Didnt seem to hurt anything. As long as the temp doesnt cycle way above what you have it set for, should be fine.

I knew I read where this had been talked about before and the answer was that the temper was the same. Best thing is my oven was a cool 410 degrees just where I left it.
I will check it with a file when I get home ;) It was too hot to get out this morning while I was barefooted and heading to work......not at the same time ;)

oh yeah - remember that warped blade I talked about a few weeks ago? There is another reason for a soft spine ;) Just straightened it where its usable, using my vise and some torking on it. Its not perfect but still within a sellable margine for me ;)

Once the proper amount of tempering has been done, the extra does nothing (assuming the temperature was constant).Cooling the steel and re-tempering it will enhance the temper up to a point where even that has no effect.
Short answer - it is nearly impossible to overtemper normal steels.

thanks guys. I am certain my little oven didnt over heat the steel. That little baby is dead on once she is at that steady point.

Brian I tempered a batch from fri. afternoon till I went back to the shop on Monday morning one time. Didn't hurt the blades but it done damage to my electricity bill. Got it to big of a hurry to take off for the weekend I guess. Take care and come when you can Mike
