Fixed blade knife for a whitetail deer hunter? Specific needs are for field dressing first and foremost, and secondarily for cutting up whitetail deer, which generally around here run between 135-200 (although 200 is much more rare than 135) lbs. Size and weight of knife are unimportant, and should be based on the task, rather than carrying it.

Price range: definately less than 100, preferably in the 50-75 dollar range.

My buddy is a hunter, who either refuses to or doesn't know how to properly sharpen a knife, so edge holding, rather than ease of field sharpening, is more important.

I'd say stainless as well.

Hopefully, these specific criteria will help (I'm usually over in the HI Cantina, so I don't know much about hunting knives)

Thanks.

google has indexed both BF and KF so a search on google with bladeforums as part of the search works fairly well.

Yeah, but then I can't ask the question!

Buck's most popular model of hunting knife is the Vanguard. They make a special version for Cabela's with an S30V alloy blade. It is stainless with an extra corrosion and scratch resistant coating in addition. It is hollow ground so that it cuts tissues well and is easy to sharpen. It has a Paul Bos heat treatment.

Go to www.cabelas.com
in the search box on the left side of the page enter:
"Alaskan Vanguard"
then click "Go"
next click on the link that comes up.

The knife is officially known as:
"Cabela's Alaskan Guide Series Vanguard Knife"
