I'm looking for something that I can attach to 550 cord that will allow me to route the cord around my belt and be able release it with a forceful tug. That way, I can have a Surefire hanging on my belt and, with a quick pull, have it in hand ready to use. Any ideas?

I wouldn´t trust something like that for fear of loosing the Surefire, would rather get a holster or pouch.

That been said, if you insist, you may try sewing some velcro on the ends or using a piece of rubber tubing, pushing the ends of the cord inside the tubing, using appropriate diameter for a good hold, maybe increasing the hold by burning the ends of the cord to make a ball or blob that will fit in tight.

Perhaps also figuring out a way to put a belt clip on the Surefire.

Crookshanks, is there one for horizontal belt carry? That would be the ticket.

There is (was). I think it's been discontinued. For a while Surefire was offering it very cheaply to clear it out. You may still find it at some retailers though.

I actually have it and don't like it. It's rather large and bulky. It'll fit any of the 2 cell 6V Surefire lights, and also has some elastic to hold a couple of spare batteries. The only problem is that it's huge compared to the vertical Surefire holsters or the Ripoffs CO-30 vertical holster.

Depending on the SureFire you have, the blackhawk holsters work pretty well for horizontal carry.

I also looked into the Spec Ops Brand Super Sheath Single, but according to the specs, it'll fit only up to a 5.5" object. The Surefire L5 measures in at 6". Does Ripoffs have a horizontal sheath?

I'm not sure of it will handle the weight of a flashlight, but a lot of the lanyard for wearing access badges around the neck have a little quick-detach doodad that allows the user to detach the badge to run it along a sensor strip. I don't know what you call it, but if you do a web search for "badge holders" or "lanyards" you might find something similar.
