Hello, I am looking for a Buck knife like I had about 1987, it was approx 3 Inches closed, and was almost the same shape as a Buck 500, and had Silver bolsters and was a single blade. anyone know what model # that would be? I have a pre81 Buck-12, (2 dot), Buck-500 (scripts B), and a Buck 501 Esquire (script B), but these are all larger than the one I used to have, can anyone help?

Sounds like it could have been a BUCK 503 or 505. They are smaller versions of the 500 and 501.

As tparrott pointed out, threre are smaller versions of the 500 & 501; top photo is a 505 Knight, bottom photo is a 503 Prince.

thanks for the help guys, I thought the body of my old knife was a bit thicker, and a bit longer than 2.75 inches,,,, but then again its been almost 30 years. so if those are my only options I guess i'll look at getting one, thanks again.

Hunter, Have you been having some freezing rain there? Nice photos. DM

No David, actually I was out in the shed this afternoon reloading some 303 BRIT (in shirtsleeves no less!) That picture was taken a couple of years ago in my backyard after a freezing rainfall - but it's the only photo of a Buck 503 I have on a hosted photo-share website. Thank you for the compliment! OH

Back in the 80's I owned a Buck "Esquire" (not a Squire), it was approximately 3.5" closed and had brown Linen Micarta scales with flush pins (don't really recall the pins, so maybe no pins?). IMHO it was a nicer knife than the current crop of 500s, sadly I misplaced it in the 90's.

You might should give that date more thought. As the model name 'Esquire' was changed to Squire in 84 or 85 and it's handles were maroon micarta. DM

Guess I should have said early 80's, probably 82. As for the color of the micarta, maroon ? Okay but it looked brown to me. Either way, it seemed like a better knife than they produce today.

I like the older Buck 500 series, mostly because I like the "Olde English" style tang stamps on them; don't know if they are better made or not. My more modern versions exhibit the same quality of fit and finish - but I also like the deep red color of the Micarta on the old ones - gives off a nice, warm look. OH

I love that used 501!

I wish Buck would bring back the micarta on those knives, but I realize cost is an issue.
