Hawks can be a down right pain when your trying to force one out. I had one of mine sell threw Blade Gallery a few months back and then it ends up getting lost in the mail. The fellow that bought it contacted me first and I told him I had a few at BG mainly because I didn't feel like doing one then so here I am forcing one out to replace the lost one. This one is the second try, the first one just didn't meet my specks. Now if I can just get it finished without screwing it up. Its totally forge finish in the picture. Just me and hand held hammers so far.....

Nice control Ray. No wonder you won "Best Forged Blade" at the Oregon Show!

You guys are amazing!

Raymond what kind of steel is that one? Looks really nice, are you going to leave it forge finished?

Mark i hope you didnt hammer that one out by hand with your sholder like it is  but looking good :D

You are both....annoying people :footinmou
I tried early yesterday morning to rough one out. I made a lot of Frontier Damascus. Sometimes it just doesn't to happen!

Looks like you found the magic dance Ray. Looking good so far. Yours too Mark. Ease up on the shoulder!

Mark, Does this mean your all healed up? Almost twins!

Terry, I need to finish off simular to the one the postal service lost. It will have a few hammer marks when I'm done. This one was out of a piece of 7/8" square 1080.

Bruce, I really prefer forging knife blades. The hawks are alot more brut force but still with finess. When I can get one to turn out like this one it still blows me away.....

Terry, I quench about an inch on both the blade and the spike. I don't see any need to harden the whole thing.

Don, I really prefer doing the hawks when I feel like doing them, that usually happens when I'm sick of making knives. I'd actually be better off doing some hawks more often. Seems like everytime I do one I have to re teach myself...

Your hawk sure looks good sitting on my anvil. Guess I'll have to make one now. Where did you say you got the punch for the handle whole? How about a source for those handles.
Larry

Does look good sitting there. I could imagine how bad my shoulder would be screaming right now, had Larry not helped get it drifted.

Larry the drifts are available from Kayne and Son I think they were around $25 or so. You can get Ash or Hickory hafts at www.crazycrow.com . Order the catelog from them as they have a bunch of usefull stuff. Well worth it.

I'll bet you scream when you go to try and get the slit done by yourself :D

So larry, you gonna put some rayskin and cordwrap on the hafts? That would be cool.
