Searching for lost relatives online

Could anyone advise what the best way to go about this is?. Basically I would like to locate or at least confirm whether certain people are sill alive.
I live abroad from America, and do not know what the procedures are or which services are recommended.

For free, google is actually pretty good for that. But don't expect your results to come up on the first page.
Even better is www.zabasearch.com

There are others as well; the best ones such as www.intelius.com are fee-based.
