I know it is a bit strange to complain that paracord is hard to find but that's what I am esperiencing right now.

I have been to a few hardware and DIY shops and they are all guilty of not stocking or selling paracord. Surely, it can't be such a scarce commodity.

What kind of stores normally have paracord?

I don't know exactly how to get mil-spec paracord, but I do know that Cabela's sells the regular type. Their web site is: http://www.cabelas.com
I don't know exactly where on the site the paracord is located (I generally just look at their catalogs) but I do know they sell it.

I am interested in learning about mil-spec cord, if anyone knows where to buy it. :)

Golok,

Typical stores that might have paracord are military surplus stores. FWIW, 550 paracord should typically cost you about $5-$8 USD (or less) per 100 ft bundle plus shipping. It is much cheaper in 1,000 or 1,200 foot rolls, which is the way I recommend buying it to get a much better per-unit price. It is typically $35-$50 USD per 1,000 ft roll ($3.50-$5.00 per 100 ft) + shipping. If you can't find it in your area and don't need 1,000 feet of it, you could buy a 1,000 foot roll of it, take what you need, and sell off the excess at the $5-$8 typical price to help pay for the roll. ;)

Beware of the vendors charging more than the prices noted above. I've seen up to $10-$15 per 100 ft.

If you see "paracord" in colors other than black, white, red, or Olive Drab (OD) it is probably not seven-strand 550 cord. Realize that the imitation non-550 cord also comes in black, white, red, and OD. So check the cord out by peeling back the outer sheath a bit and counting the inner cords to insure that there are seven of them. If you are buying online, verify with the vendor that they are selling actual seven-strand 550 cord, not something else, before buying cord from them.

There are usually a bunch of auctions for paracord on eBay. WARNING: Be extremely careful with these auctions until you establish who is actually selling 550 paracord, not just "military style" cord or "parachute cord" which is not actually 550 paracord. The shorter lengths of paracord sold on eBay (20-40 ft lengths) are likely used shrouds that have been cut off of parachutes, so the condition of the cord is unknown. IMHO it is worth it to buy new 550 cord because the price isn't all that much different from these chopped off shroud lines.

MaineMilitary.com advertises their 1,000-foot rolls of paracord on eBay as the real 550 cord. (disclaimer: I haven't done business with them personally) They have a roll of OD 550 paracord on eBay now with no bidders at an opening bid of $25 USD + shipping. That equates to $2.50 per 100 ft, which is a very good deal!

Amherst Drop Zone carries 550 cord in black, white, OD, and red in 1200 ft rolls for $50 USD + shipping. (disclaimer: I haven't done business with these folks either, so can't vouch for their product or service)

Brigade Quartermaster has 550 cord:

US Cavalry also carries 550 paracord:

If you don't need real 550 cord and want the lighter cord in bright easily-seen colors, http://www.ubraidit.com/ has it in a bunch of colors.

I've had good luck with this guy on Ebay . I got the green and the black and was very happy with the price/quality and shipping.

Great, after looking it up again I think I'm going to have to buy more
Oh the power of suggestion...

I second emmado on ebay I've made several purchases from them and they were all smooth, on the other hand I bought from one guy way back in Dec and never recieved my paracord. I think they barred him though.

I've been living off a roll from the Sportsman's Guide for a few years now and will actually be ordering another spool soon. It's not genuine, but it IS decent stuff with 7 strands. I think the most demanding use I've had was to string up three hammocks among a triangle of trees.

http://www.1sks.com, aka the owner of bladeforums, sells genuine mil-spec 550 paracord.

http://www.1sks.com/store/550.html

I got some paracord from a dutch store once, but that had 8 (!) inner strands (each of those strands were made of 3 thinner strands). Very good stuff.

Later I got some from Ebay, that had 7 inner strands but those were made up of 2 thinner strands.

After my vacation I will try some of 1sks's cord.

I have a spool on order from Drop Zone, they shipped the same day I placed the order. It's in the UPS pipeline.

Neko 2 and Fred A, do you know if emmando22's paracord is genuine mil-spec? He also sells cord in Royal Blue, Kelly green, yellow and red - I'm not aware that the military even uses those colors for cord.

I bought para-cord from CDT. It came in a bundle which looked like it had been cut from a parachute. One of the ends of each cord was "rigged" and the 28 cords were wrapped up into something about 5' long. After unwrapping it, I had 28 pieces of 22" lengths of 550. Is the strength of para-cord affected by a para-drop?

In addition to the pieces I got from CDT, I bought a spool from Drop Zone. It shipped the day after my order went through -- easy company to work with. Good stuff too, now I can make any length cordage I need.
