Hello. I'm writing this because I've been frustrated in my recent search for a small EDC knife and figured someone out there might be able to offer a suggestion or two. There are no decent knife shops in my area so I've been looking online but there's only so much you can tell from a picture and a brief description. I've narrowed it down to some specific characteristics, and any ideas are much appreciated. Here's what I'm looking for:
- Folding
- 2.5 to 3.5" closed
- Partially serrated
- Not a switchblade
- Easy to clip and unclip inside a small pocket
- Thin
- $50 max

Thanks

How about a kershaw scallion or leek? They both have a/o, but they are not switchblades. I believe they both can come with serrations. I have experience with the leek, and it is extremely thin. You can puchase a leek anywhere from 30 to 50 dollars. Good luck!

I am curious to why you want partial serrations on such a small blade. Why not just go full serrations or none at all?

If there's a partially serrated Kershaw Skyline, I'd vote for that.

I'd personally get a PE Kershaw OD-1. It's almost my favorite knife at any price. It's a lot of knife in a slim package.

Keep your eyes out soon to be released Spyderco Cat, alright its Taiwanese made, but has good steel S30V was it, carbon fiber handles and blade length is 2,5". Its plain edge and costs roughly $50. It might be worth of thinking.

And like Thalastin asked why do you want combo edge for such small knife. One alternative is Kershaw Leek with combo edge.

Sounds like you just described a Spyderco Delica, give or take a few bucks. (And an inch or so.)

+1 on the Delica, but there are a gazillion choices out there in the range you described that have most of what you are looking for:

  • Benchmade Mini-Ambush
  • Benchmade Mini-Griptillian (tough to find under $50)
  • Cold Steel Voyager (not sure about partial serration, though)
  • Kershaw Storm
  • Kershaw RAM
  • Kershaw Zing
  • Spyderco Delica
  • Spyderco Persistance

The medium Cold Steel Voyager.

CRKT m-16 works okay.

Look at the Spyderco catalog with a ruler in hand. Lots to be had there.

When you get a list of potentials, search youtube for reviews.

I have yet to find serrations useful on anything other than a dedicated, task specific knife.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm looking closely at the Kershaw Scallion, the Boker Subcom, or possibly a Spyderco Dragonfly because the size factor is crucial for my purposes. I'm into partial serration because that's what I'm used to but wouldn't necessarily be opposed to full serration; (occasionally I need to cut through rope.)
