Aye Mateys,
I´m looking for a serious quality golden age of piracy cutlass- shouldn´t break my treasure chest thou.
Internet research provided windlass cutlery as a producer/sold thru museumreplicas. I don´t know about their quality , I want them sharp like my fma blades. Any other suggestions?

Actually, Matt, any hanger from the late 17th and early 18th Centuries would work well in that role. Pirates used whatever they could lay hands upon, so the infantry hagers of the period were undoubtedly used by pirates, as were the rapiers, smallswords, hunting swords, and cuttoes.

Cold steel makes an appropriately piratey 1817 navy cutlass. It has a blued steel blade that would go nicely with a few cap n' ball pistols. My buddy has one. Paid $180.00 It is quite Solid and Sharp!

Avast ye matey!

YAAARRRR!

Unless you are seeking a decorative item simply to complete a costume, stay away from Denix as they are not up to any kind of use.

The Cold Steel cutlass is a replica of the US Navy Model 1917, not 1817, and it is hardly accurate for any sort of Spanish Main pirate character. That Calcutta police hanger might work, it depends upon the details of what it looks like in the hand.

Yarr! what be a hundred years between shipmates!
I stand by me word. Tis' a fine cutlass none the less!
ya land lubbers!

Windlass is Museum Replicas' owner and they have a reputation for spotty quality control, but they seem to be getting better from reports. Museum Replicas has a very good returns policy and it is apparently needed. Oh, and BTW, they are an Indian company, so their arms are made in India.

thanks guys, i think i´ll look into some polish and czech bladesmiths that are good and cheap. maybe they will come up with something for me.

Arrrrrrrrrrrrgh! Matt.

Did you look at http://www.historicarmory.com/itmidx8.htm
Keep in mind alot of places are probably going to be running low on their stocks with the new Pirate movie - everyone wants a Cutlass now.
I would suggest doing some research on them from the historical perspective and then deciding on a weapon that fits the period you want as well as the "look." You want to be able to sharpen it... Do the repro swords typically hold an edge?

You might be able to pick something up at a local show or at auction if you look around online. I know a specialty house in the UK that deals in antique and vintage Naval arms such as this - the real ones, however my "little black book" of knowledge with the URL is at work. It could be worth you're saving up for the real deal of what fits the look.
